This
bibliography was inspired in part by the traditional place
that children’s literature has enjoyed at Framingham
State College. In
1861,Ticknor and Fields, a noted Boston firm, published
SEVEN LITTLE SISTERS WHO LIVED ON THE ROUND BALL THAT
FLOATS IN THE AIR, by Jane Andrews, one of the college’s
early graduates. This
book, designed to introduce children to the concept of one
world, is frequently cited in histories of American
literature for children as an important work.
We dedicate this effort to Jane Andrews, hoping
that it too, in some small way, reflects the high
principles that she endorsed.
In
selecting one hundred fifty titles for this bibliography,
we included only those still in print.
Since publishing for children did not become a
major concern until the twentieth century, we limited our
choices as follows: thirty
books from the first fifty years, forty five from the
second fifty years, and seventy five from the third fifty
years. The
first section of the list includes titles originally
published in countries other than the United States.
Because of the increase in the number of books
available we narrowed our focus to those published in this
country for the second two sections.
For most years we only chose one title; however for
some years several titles were selected.
Consequently, many outstanding favorites may have
been omitted, not because we didn’t remember them, but
because of these limitations.
When you use this bibliography, hopefully you can
extend its value by adding your own selections.
This
bibliography is a revision and continuation of the
original compiled by Mary M. Burns, former Director of the
Curriculum Library and Senior Librarian Emerita, and Mary
Pat Craig for the College’s sesquicentennial in 1989.
