THE BAND'S VISIT
Bikur Ha-Tizmoret; Israel, 2007
Winner of an International Film Critics' Award at the Cannes Film Festival, Eran Kolirin's wise, lighthearted comedy deals with an Egyptian police orchestra that gets lost while on tour in Israel. Although the political issues that surround the visit are never far from the surface, Kolirin's emphasis is on how people of all cultures are bound by the trials and tribulations of life itself.

In Arabic, English, and Hebrew with English subtitles. 87 minutes.

October 13

ALEXANDRA
Russia, 2007
In Alexandr Sokurov's powerful meditation on war legendary opera star Galina Vishnevskaya (in a towering performance) stars as Alexandra, an indomitable, unwaveringly compassionate woman who visits her grandson, an officer stationed in a Russian military compound in Chechnya. Her basic humanity and belief in life offer a quietly devastating indictment of the cynicism and absurdities of war.

In Russian with English subtitles. 92 minutes.

February 19

PRIVATE FEARS IN PUBLIC PLACES
Coeurs; France, 2006
Winner of the Silver Lion at the Venice Film Festival, Alain Resnais's adaptation of Alan Ayckbourn's play is an artful examination of not only the search for love but also the relationship between theater and film. A poignant comedy, it has to do with seven Parisians whose lives affect one another's, even though they do not all know one another. With an all-star cast led by Andre Dussollier and Sabine Azema.

In French with English subtitles. 120 minutes.

March 26

4 MONTHS, 3 WEEKS AND 2 DAYS
Romania 2007
The most celebrated film of the Romanian New Wave, Cristian Mungiu's riveting account of a young college student desperately trying to help her roommate secure an illegal late-term abortion is far more than an "abortion film." It is also a corrosive examination of life during the final days of Communism in Romania. Please note: this film has some disturbing images, and is for adults only.

In Romanian and English with English subtitles. 113 minutes.

All film screenings will be in the College Center Forum at 7:30 PM
