NuvaRing

The NuvaRing or "The ring" is a flexible vaginal ring used to prevent pregnancy. The ring contains a combination of hormones similar to those used in birth control pills.   It is transparent, colorless, and easy to use.  A new ring is inserted into the vagina and remains there for three weeks.  At the start of the fourth week, the ring is removed  allowing for a regular menstrual period.

Side effects of the ring are similar to those of birth control pills.  They include: breast tenderness, headache, nausea/vomiting, irregular bleeding or spotting, menstrual cramping and stomach pain. In addition, other side effects associated with the ring, may be vaginal infection and vaginal discharge.

When used correctly the ring is as effective as birth control pills in preventing pregnancy.   Women for whom the ring may not be appropriate are those including pregnant women, those experiencing vaginal bleeding, a history of clotting disorders, heart disease, severe hypertension (high blood pressure), and diabetes.
