Periodic Abstinence

A couple may choose to periodically abstain from intercourse during the predicted time of ovulation.  This method depends on regular menstrual cycles.  Ovulation is predicted by counting out from the date of the last menses (LMP), where the first day of bleeding is day one.  Ovulation can occur between day 10 -14.  Also, thickening of vaginal secretions occurs during ovulation and may be another helpful indicator to when intercourse should be avoided.  This method is an estimate of time of ovulation and its effectiveness rate in preventing pregnancy has a 25% failure rate.
