Katherine Almy Mahon G'00
Using
what I learned at FSC about counseling and providing interactive
nutrition education, I’ve created my own company. My husband and I
are launching our business: Potluck Puzzles (www.potluckpuzzles.com).
I have
created two books full of fun, interactive nutrition puzzles that
are designed to teach/reinforce important concepts in diabetes
education. Using what I’ve learned by working as the lead dietitian
for outpatient nutrition at
Newton
Wellesley
Hospital,
I’ve incorporated many points that are of interest to patients. We
see many different applications for our educational puzzle books in
the healthcare and diabetes community. Our first big sale has been
to a diabetes camp in
California!
In
creating these puzzles, I often think back to my days at FSC, where
I learned so much about counseling techniques. I clearly remember
when we videotaped ourselves providing diet instructions and watched
one another's videos in class. Watching my own video as well as the
other videos was a somewhat painfully embarrassing experience, but
it was an effective learning tool. I still smile when I think of a
classmate who in her video said: “I am going to educate you on…”
What a difference the choice of language makes. I also think of the
health fair that we put on for our Community Nutrition class and our
Community Nutrition internship projects, where we needed to be
certain that our poster boards included interactive activities and
evaluations of the learning points.
My
experiences at FSC have made a strong impact on how I counsel
patients and on the content of our Potluck Puzzles books.

style, grammar, mechanics, content and length. Photos are also
welcome.

Faculty Notes
Professor Jim Eng of the Art and Music Department
has a solo art show, "Work in Collage and Mixed Mediums" in the
Hess Gallery at Pine Manor College in Chestnut Hill on exhibit
through April 23.
Professors Arlene Handschuch and Irene Foster of
the Fashion Design and Retailing Department appeared on Boston's
Channel 4 CBS/WBZ during the a recent 11 p.m. newscast in a consumer
report segment on "Getting the Best Retail Value for Your Dollar."
The show was repeated on the San Francisco CBS TV station affiliate.
Handschuch and Foster evaluated the quality and price points of
apparel from three major local retailers and made suggestions and
recommendations on what consumers should look for when comparing and
purchasing apparel items. The items were purchases and brought to
FSC by the Channel 4 staff, and their evaluation was filmed without
their knowing from which stores the goods originated.
Professor Robert Johnson, Jr., of the
Communications Department gave an on-camera interview for
Philadelphia's ABC News and public affairs program "Prime Time
Weekend." The show, which aired Feb. 10, focused on Johnson's new
documentary, "No Short Climb: Race Workers and America's Defense
Technology," and the working relationship he established with the
Information Age Science Center in Wall, N.J.-- the state's first
military history and technology museum.
Professor Keri Straka of the Art and Music
Department received a juror's award for her work in the group
exhibition "Craft Forms 2006" at the Wayne Art Center in
Philadelphia. Her work also was reviewed in The Philadelphia
Inquirer.

Henry Whittemore Library Special Collections
Exhibit Announcement
In honor of Women's History Month, a new exhibit has
been created at the Henry Whittemore Library displaying materials
from some of our Normal School women, including Mary Swift Lamson
(1840), a graduate of the first class and an early pioneer in
teaching at the Perkins School for the Blind. She was known to have
inspired Helen Keller to speak. Also on display are materials from
Lydia Stow (1841), another graduate of the first class and an
abolitionist who may have risked the lives of herself and her family
to aid slaves fleeing to safety in the North. You'll learn about
Louisa Harris (1840) and Adeline Ireson (1841/42), who became
lifelong teachers. They never married, defying society's standards
and expectations. Find out about Jennie Howard (1866), who went to
Argentina to answer Argentinean President Domingo Sarmientos' call
to establish normal schools in that country. She made education in
Argentina her life's work and never returned to the United States.
Read excerpts from Frances Merritt's (1855) letter describing being
one of the first students to attend the College once it moved to
Framingham on what was then called Bare Hill. Learn about Olivia
Davidson Washington (1881), wife of Booker T. Washington and
teacher-administrator of the Tuskegee Institute of Alabama. Catch a
glimpse of Bertha Johnson (1885) and her success in becoming editor
of Kindergarten Magazine in 1897. Review some of her many writings,
ranging from educational topics to her passion for the women's
suffrage movement.
Come and see for yourself some of the women who made
history here at Framingham State and take pride in the successes and
examples these women set before us.
