Foods Lab Renamed in Honor of AlumnaThe Framingham State College Board of Trustees unanimously
approved the renaming of the Experimental Foods Lab in Hemenway Hall to “The Dr.
Constance B. Jordan Experimental Foods Lab” on May 25.
Dr. Constance Jordan, professor emerita and
trustee of the College, received her B.S. from Framingham State College in 1941,
her M.P.H. from Harvard School of Public Health in 1948 and her Ph.D. from
Cornell University in 1954. During her career at Framingham State College,
which spanned more than 25 years, she served as professor, department chair and
dean. Her strong commitment to Consumer Sciences, along with her many
contributions to the College and the field of nutrition, have brought
recognition and distinction to her profession and to her College. This
past year she established the Constance B. Jordan Scholarship.
The following is the citation that was presented to Dr.
Jordan when she received an Honorary Degree (Doctor of Science) in 1987:
“Alumna, professor, administrator, and friend. A dedicated humanitarian
whose high professional standards motivate us all. Her many contributions
to Framingham State College will long endure.”

Alumnus Aims for
Higher Ground
in Debut
Chapbook of Poems
A keen observer of the small and
significant issues facing our world and our own cities, poet Enzo
Surin '00 recently had his chapbook collection of poetry published by
Finishing Line Press.
Higher Ground is a small, yet
powerful, collection of poetry that speaks on many levels of racial,
social, economical and spiritual struggle, from the streets of the
inner city to the halls of higher education. Written just months
before the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, Higher Ground
seeks to uplift the spirit and liberate the heart, crafted in the rich
traditions of jazz, blues and hip-hop.
University of Oregon associate
professor and poet Dorianne Laux says, “Enzo Surin writes, ‘I guess
I'll keep on writing until my lines can stop a bullet,’ and we're
grateful for his commitment, for his willingness...these are bold,
necessary poems.”
Author and poet J.D. Scrimgeour says, “James Baldwin tells us that
love is difficult. Surin testifies to that, and, like
Baldwin, he also testifies to love’s necessity.
This is poetry that matters.”
Surin is a literacy advocate and is
currently employed as a library assistant at
Bunker Hill
Community College in
Charlestown,
Mass. He also volunteers as editor
of Joy of Writing, a literary journal for Literacy Volunteers
of Charlottesville/Albemarle. His poetry is forthcoming and has
appeared in The Caribbean Writer, Soundings East,
Pine Island Journal of New England Poetry, Red River Review,
Tight, and other literary journals. He has participated in
poetry readings in
New York,
New Jersey,
Chicago and
Massachusetts. He lives in
Boston, where he looks to continue
his involvement with literacy efforts in the inner city.

Independent Association of Framingham State
Alumni
2006 Annual Meeting
More than 40 members of
the Independent Association of Framingham State Alumni gathered on June 3, 2006,
at Alumni House for the Association’s annual meeting. They hailed from
Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Maine, Rhode Island, Michigan,
Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia and California. IAFSA President Kathleen
Cotter ’78 welcomed the audience and introduced each speaker.
Treasurer Lecia
Shronce ’03
detailed the
balance in each of the funds held by the Association. Virginia Baldi Ferguson
’59, Chair of the Amelia Davis Fund, asked for volunteers to write notes of
cheer to elder or shut-in alumni. She also is looking for the names of any
alumni who are in need of financial assistance from the Fund. Gloria Aspesi
’57, Chair of the Ellen Hyde Loan Fund, reported on the committee’s activity
and asked for help in letting
FSC students know of the availability of interest-free loans. Marilyn Booth
Manzella ’69, Executive Administrator, reviewed the activities of the office
during the past year and appealed for candidates to serve on the Executive
Board, volunteers to assist with office work and committee members. The
reports were followed by a number of questions from the audience and a lively
discussion. The Executive Board was grateful to hear the views of the
members of the Association who encouraged the Board to continue on its current
path of service. A reception hosted by the IAFSA Executive Board followed.

Reunion
2006 |

Reunion Weekend 2006
Despite periodic torrential downpours, the spirit of more than 300 alumni and
friends could not be dampened during Reunion Weekend, June 3 and 4, 2006.
Framingham State College graduates came “back to the hill” from California,
Oregon, Michigan, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, North Carolina, Virginia,
Maryland, Florida, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Maine, New
Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont, and of course, Massachusetts. They spanned
eight decades, with representatives from 1936 to 2005, and celebrated at more
than a dozen events, including luncheons, dinners, a cocktail reception, a
memorial service, campus tours and an awards ceremony.
Mildred Maynard Patt '36, along with members of the Classes of 1941, 1946 and
1951 enjoyed a luncheon hosted by Interim College President Philip M. Dooher.
Linsley Hall housed more than 50 alumni, including Helen "Tenney"
Gardner Miller
'46, who drove solo from Michigan for the Big Weekend. Those brave enough to
relive their College days experienced the joys of roommates and the tribulations
of community washrooms. And overnight guests reportedly thoroughly enjoyed
themselves during late night sessions of reminiscing about the "best years" of
their lives.
Meanwhile,
the Class of 1956 turned out in record numbers, with 47 percent of classmates
celebrating on campus. The 1956 Reunion Committee planned a moving memorial
service, officiated by Sister Harriet Cutting, for departed classmates. After
the service, the Class joined Dr. Dooher for a private dinner. At the dinner,
members of the Class received a Memory Book that captured their yesteryears at
Framingham State College. Margaret Callahan received a special surprise - she
won a fabulously stylish red hat keeping with the Class's plan to wear such hats
during the Procession of the Classes the next morning. A rousing round of
stories of the good old days told by members of the Class followed, with Nancy
Tracy Fitzgerald setting the tone
for lots of laughter.
One brave group of 1981ers decked out in rain gear decided to take a tour of the
beautifully transformed, albeit a bit soggy, campus. They enjoyed checking out
their former living quarters in O'Conner Hall before putting on their dinner
attire and joining some of the younger classes for a delightful dinner and
dancing.
The rain continued Sunday morning, but that didn't scare off alumni representing
the Classes of 1936 - 2001 who participated in the annual alumni processional.
They marched from Crocker Grove to the newly renovated College Center Forum for
the General Assembly and Alumni Achievement Awards Ceremony. Keeping with
tradition, 12 celebrating classes presented Dr. Dooher with gifts to the
College. After the presentation of Class Gifts, Professor Edward Melegian
performed a nostalgic tribute to the Celebrating Classes. Incoming Alumni
Association President Margaret Brodeur Guardiani '77 presided over the awards
program in which Mary Paula Casey Baumann '61, Andrea M. Hallion G'75,
Pamela S. Hunt '87, M. Joan Dewire McKenna '56, Kimberlee
Sirois Pita '90 and Richard S.
Willis '74 G'78 were honored as Distinguished Alumni. Faculty from the honorees'
respective departments presented the awards, adding their touching comments
about each of the outstanding alumni.
Then it was off to lunch. Alumni had the opportunity to
congratulate the honorees and mingle with old friends before
their journeys home. As the weekend came to an end, there
were countless vows to spread the word to missing classmates
about the importance of returning to the beloved hilltop College,
and there were more than a few vows to keep in touch and not
wait to get together until the next Reunion to Reconnect, Reunite
and Reminisce.

Regarding Reunion 2006...
"I just wanted to e-mail you to say thanks to you and all the staff for the hard
work you put into making the 2006 Reunion a special day for all. This is the
first time I have attended a Reunion and it was my 20th, which I was able to
share with my mother (Anne Murphy Buonopane), who celebrated her 50th, and my
sister (Theresa Buonopane Fontes), who celebrated her 15th. We had a great time,
and the food at the luncheon was delicious. I'm sure with the inclement weather
it was difficult to keep things organized, but you all did a great job. I really
admired how the 50th Reunion class had their graduation picture on a pin, and
one woman even brought her yearbook from 1956. I also loved the red hats..."
Sincerely,
Diane Buonopane Bernazzani '86
**********
"As a member of the Class of '46, I want to thank you for the warmth and welcome
we found at the College last Saturday [June 3]. The lunch was excellent, the
president's greeting heartfelt, the van an unexpected and necessary joy. Nina
Ricci (I can't believe that name; I wear her often) and President Dooher were
incomparable. I almost felt as if I had never left, though our campus was so
very, very different, and charming, too. My Class had 77 members; 8 of us came,
one driving solo from Michigan; 23 are dead, and perhaps the weather kept a few
safe by their own firesides. For some reason, I knew I would appear if I had to
walk! It was a Reunion to Remember.
Sincerely,
Cam Hilbert '46
**********
Mary "Esther" Brady Dehler '46 sends her regards to the Class. She says she
regrets she could not attend Reunion, as Framingham State College and her
classmates have been so good to her. She would appreciate anyone who would like
to tell her how Reunion Weekend was!
**********
Dear Framingham grads, especially 41ers,
Having moved full time to Florida I’m sure has added many years to our lives. We
do things slowly now but do get around locally. Our last trip north was two
years ago to our oldest daughter’s retirement party from teaching computer
science on Martha’s Vineyard. We are now in our mid-80s. My then-boyfriend (now
husband for 65 years) attended my Framingham graduation. Best wishes to my
classmates and all other Framingham grads. Life has been enriched because of my
Framingham training.
Sincerely,
Helen Pauline Milne Graves '41
**********
Wish my classmates the best!
