Red Sox Trump White Sox
About 50 alumni rooted the Boston Red Sox to
victory over last year's Series champs, the Chicago White Sox, on Sept. 5.
The alumni fans from Framingham State met before the game at Pizzeria Uno, where
they enjoyed a variety of pizza, calzones and mouthwatering desserts. Then
it was off the Fenway, where alumni had a great view of the game from seats
behind the dugout.

Dormitory Living Now and 50 Years Ago
By Nikki Wetherell '07
Walking into O'Connor Hall at 11:06 on a
weeknight is not a problem today; however, 50 years ago, you would have had to
answer to the House Mother. Life on campus was very different for the Class of
1956 than for Framingham
State College students today.
Today’s students can come and go from their
dorms, and campus, as they please. They can have overnight guests and they
don’t have curfews. But 50 years ago, students (all women, as men were not
admitted to the College until 1964) were required to live on campus and were not
allowed to have cars on campus unless in the event of an emergency and approved
as by the dean.
According to the Dormitory Living guide
issued to members of the Class of 1956, students were to be quiet and in their
dorms by 7:30 p.m., and in their rooms by 10:30 p.m. Seniors, however, had until
11 p.m. to be in their rooms. There were even restrictions on how many times a
students could be late getting back to their rooms each month. Seniors were
allowed unlimited “lates” until 11:05 p.m.; juniors were allowed one late per
week; and sophomores could be late once per month. These students also needed
written permission from the dean for “leaving with escorts,” taking part in
physical activities such as “canoeing, swimming, sailing, flying, skating,
bicycling, or horseback riding,” and “driving with friends or relatives.”
To be sure, etiquette rules have changed
dramatically during the past half-century. In 1956, students could smoke in the
“Butt Room” of Dwight Hall. But smoking “while on the streets of Framingham,
while traveling in public vehicles in the vicinity of Framingham, when
Framingham girls [went] in groups to some place for professional or social
reasons connected with the college life” was prohibited. Still, smoking in
other areas was permitted as long as the students conducted themselves "in a
becoming manner" and did not bring "discredit to the College.” While many
things have changed, smoking is still not permitted in the dormitories.
Quiet hours still exist but now occur from
11 p.m. to 8 a.m. Sunday through Thursday and 1 a.m. to 9 a.m. on weekends.
Today, the College consists of resident and commuter students. Commuters make up
about half of the student population. About 33 percent of students are male,
and House Mothers have been replaced by resident assistants (RAs) and residents
directors (RDs).
If you haven't been back to campus in some
time, you would be amazed by some of the changes that have taken place. Yet one
of the best things about Framingham State is that as much as things change, the
feeling on campus is comfortably the same.
Alumni Perspectives are welcome. Submissions should be no more
than 500 words and can be e-mailed to development@frc.mass.edu or mailed to
Hilltop Happenings Perspectives, Office of Alumni Relations, Framingham State
College, 100 State St., Framingham, MA 01701. Submissions may be edited for
style, grammar, mechanics, content and length.

IAFSA Welcomes 15th President of FSC
At its September meeting, the Executive
Board of the Independent Association of Framingham State Alumni welcomed the
15th President of the College, Dr. Timothy J. Flanagan, and his wife, Dr. Nancy
A. Flanagan, to the College, Alumni House and the neighborhood. The board
presented the Flanagans with a collection of books related to the histories of
the College, the Association, and the Town of Framingham. Executive Director of
College Advancement Alan Quebec also attended as a guest. After the social
hour, the board convened in the conference room and discussed with President
Flanagan the shape of the future between Framingham State College and IAFSA. A
mechanism was developed to continue the conversation during the next few months
and much optimism was expressed.

dedicated adviser.
In her 33 years at Framingham State
