FSC to Honor Athletes During Hall of Fame Ceremony

The Framingham State College Athletics Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will take place on Friday, Oct. 20, 2006, as part of the Homecoming & Family Weekend festivities.  The dinner will be in the newly renovated College Center with the cocktail hour beginning at 6 p.m. and the induction ceremony and dinner taking place at 7 p.m.  For ticket information, please contact Framingham State College Associate Director of Athletics Carey Williams Eggen at 508-626-4565 or cwilliams@frc.mass.edu.

The Framingham State College Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2006 Inductees include:

Kathy Fay ’74 was a varsity softball, basketball, field hockey and volleyball player for the Framingham State Rams.  She was an outstanding shortstop for the Rams softball program in its early years.  Fay was a leader in the early years of women’s athletics at Framingham State College and helped pave the way for the female athletes that followed. She was also a coach for the Rams field hockey, volleyball and softball programs after she finished her outstanding career.

Margaret Guardiani ’77 was a versatile athlete for the Rams as she played four years of field hockey and basketball and two years of volleyball, tennis and softball.  She was a three-year captain of the field hockey team and a one-year captain of the women’s basketball team.  Guardiani was selected as the Unsung Hero of the women’s basketball team, served as a representative to the College Athletic Council for three years and received the Richard F. Cugini Award for dedication and service to Framingham State College athletics.

James Marchant ’82 was a standout football and baseball player for the Rams.  He was tri-captain of the Rams football team his senior season and was named the team Unsung Hero in 1980 and team MVP in 1981.  Marchant was selected to the NEFC All-Star Team Honorable Mention Defensive Back in 1979 and 1980.  He finished his career holding several records including points in a game (24), touchdowns in a game (4), career interceptions (18) and career interception yardage (292).

Maureen McPhee McKinnon ’85 was a three-sport athlete at Framingham State College participating in women’s soccer, women’s basketball and softball.  She was captain of the women’s soccer team and softball team in her senior seasons.  On the court she averaged 9.2 point per game over her four-year career.

Robert Cusick ’84 was a member of the football and ice hockey teams at Framingham State College.   He played four years on the Rams offensive line and was a three-year starter as well as special teams player.  Cusick is posthumously being inducted into the Hall of Fame.

Rodd A. Patten ’94 was one of the great wide receivers and punt return men in Rams football history.  He currently holds eight Framingham State career records and 5 New England Football Conference (NEFC) records.  Patten, who was captain his senior season, is the Rams record holder for receiving yards in a season (956), receiving yards in a career (3,178), touchdown receptions in a season (13), touchdown receptions in a career (38), most points in a season (78) and career (252), and touchdowns in a season (13) and career (42).  Patten holds the NEFC records for career touchdown receptions, punt returns in a game and season, and punt returns yardage in a game and season.  Patten received several individual awards, including being awarded the Gold Helmet twice in 1993.  He was selected AP All-New England Division II and III First Team in 1993 as well as being named the ECAC Division 3 New England Player of the Year as well as a first team ECAC All-Star.  He was a second team ECAC All-star wide receiver in 1992 and return specialist in 1993.  In addition, Patten was the NCAA Division III Football Statistical Champion in 1991 for receiving yards per game.

Larry Boyd served as the Director of Athletics at Framingham State College for 20 years and has been a supporter of Framingham State College Athletics since his retirement.  He was instrumental in the introduction of women’s soccer at Framingham State as well as beginning the Framingham State College Athletics Hall of Fame in 1991.

James Brochu has been a friend of Framingham State College Athletics since he finished his outstanding ice hockey career for the Rams.  Each year, he is a major contributor to the Rams golf tournament, which just celebrated its 25th anniversary.  He was a four-year ice hockey player and a two-year captain during his time at Framingham State.  He was one of the most prolific scorers in Rams history and was also the first Ram to have his jersey retired.

The 2006 fall athletics schedules are now available.  Please visit www.framingham.edu/athletics/ for the most up to date schedules, scores and results for all our athletic teams.

Can't Curb Kevin Gosnell's Entrepreneurial Spirit

Picture two college students looking for ways to fund the cost of their education. Not an unusual picture, except the two freshmen who began seal coating driveways to make some cash to pay tuition turned their operation into a multimillion-dollar company.

Kevin Gosnell '91 and Tony Heffernan grew up together in Hanover, where they mowed lawns, shoveled driveways and worked at gas stations together. In 1987, they founded what is today one of the largest residential and commercial asphalt companies in New England.

T&K Asphalt Services, Inc., had its rather humble beginnings, however. The friends earned capital for their new business by selling a vending machine for a $600 profit. The sale allowed them to purchase a truck and some sea coating supplies. Each time they sea coated a driveway, the young entrepreneurs placed a makeshift sign out by the street. The signs weren't pretty, but people started to take notice.

After running the summer business for three years, Gosnell and Heffernan decided to make the operation their first "real life" job. Driveways became parking lots and seal coating became paving, and from there, a commercial division was launched.

Gosnell, who received his degree in economics from Framingham State College, serves as president, while Heffernan is the director of operations. The company, which has more than 200 employees, has completed more than 200,000 projects and has accounts ranging from residential driveways to Jordan's Furniture, Taco Bell and KeySpan. On top of its asphalt services, the company recently added a landscape construction division to its repertoire. Not bad for what began as a summer job...

Red Sox Fever

Alumni said the Boston Red Sox vs. Cleveland Indians game on August 1 was "hot, hot, hot" - and they meant it. With temperatures still hovering at 91 degrees that evening, the fans from Framingham met up to cool their heels at Pizzeria Uno before the game. Cold beverages, an array of appetizers, pizzas and desserts hit the spot.  Then it was off to Fenway, where alumni sweated it out while the Sox put up a good fight. Unfortunately, they were unable to come up with the win. There were, however, some blazing hits. Mark Loretta got the Sox on the board with a solo homerun in the fourth inning. Manny Ramirez singled in the fifth. Then, in the ninth, Alex Gonzalez made it even more interesting with a two-run homer, giving the Red Sox their three runs.

Tanglewood Event

FSC alumni, faculty, staff and friends said they were thrilled to have new College President Timothy J. Flanagan and his wife, Nancy, join them for this year's trip to Tanglewood in August. Some were even a little surprised - after all, the Flanagans only arrived in Massachusetts the week before, having moved from Rochester, N.Y. The group spent the early part of the afternoon picnicking on the lawn, enjoying wine and trading stories. Then it was time for everyone to take their seats in the Shed for the Boston Symphony Orchestra performance conducted by Donald Runnicles. The concert featured Mozart’s Symphony No. 38, Prague; Strauss’ Suite from Der Rosenkavalier; and Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 5, Emperor.

Cape Cod Club

The Cape Cod Framingham Club awarded Holly Cabral, ’08, and Aimee Ross, ’07, each $1,000 scholarships at its annual Scholarship Luncheon at Harbor Point in Cummaquid on August 16. In the past,

the club has awarded just one scholarship per year. Members of the Club also enjoyed being introduced to the new College president, Dr. Timothy Flanagan, who also addressed the group, and his wife, Dr. Nancy A. Flanagan.

The club, which meets three times a year, welcomes new members. The next meeting, which includes lunch, is October 4 at 11:30 a.m. at the Barnstable Tavern. Robert Pease, an author who writes about Cape Cod, will be the speaker.  To reserve for the luncheon meeting or for membership information, please contact Joan Costello Colosi, '75, at 508-394-4266.

Perspectives

'Physical' Education in the Late 1930s

Athene Thompson Anthony '39 recalls the way things were while she attended Framingham State College. "There wasn't much of an Athletic Department, just a small gym on the lower level of May Hall. This worked out pretty well, as only one class at a time used it. I didn't look forward to playing basketball, though. I was no match for the robust, gung-ho, super-enthusiastic players as they came barreling down the court. The best I could do was to keep out of their way. And then there was the shower afterwards! The individual stalls had no water controls, and we achieved some privacy by hanging the loops of a large towel over hooks on the front side. Miss Taylor climbed up on a stepstool and reached overhead to the water controls. She could tell by the screams when the water sprayed in the stalls was too cold! Most of us tried not to get our hair wet, as it got pretty uncomfortable running to Dwight Hall in cold weather for our next class.

And, speaking of May Hall, you probably know about the tunnel from May to the next building. Most girls had lockers for coats and books in May Hall. I entered FSC in my sophomore year, and there were no lockers in May Hall. My locker was in the basement of the next building, so I had to go downstairs and through the tunnel. It was narrow with few lights and it seemed long. Basements in both buildings were full of trunks and suitcases, very cavernous, and very silent.

Dear old FSC!! If only there had been men students at the time, it would have been perfect!"
