Regional Events in Florida!

Our annual Florida regional alumni events proved to be a blast once again this year! Assistant Director of Alumni Relations Robert Walmsley as well as President Timothy Flanagan and Dr. Nancy Flanagan met up with alumni for several events during the week of March 11-16.

Highlights included taking in a Red Sox spring training game and pre-game picnic at JetBlue Park, the team’s brand new facility in Fort Myers. While in Venice alumni took in a theatre performance at the Venice Theatre. Alumni also gathered for a luncheon at the Boathouse Restaurant in Naples after watching the Old Naples St. Patrick’s Day parade.

Alumni Gathering in Los Angeles!

The Office of Alumni Relations held a regional reception with FSU alumni living in the Los Angeles California area on Friday, March 9. New Executive Director of Development and Alumni Relations Eric Gustafson and President Timothy Flanagan were on hand.

Class years of attendees ranged from 1965 to 2007 and there was great enthusiasm for similar events in the future!

Pick Up the Phone

Would you like to speak with a current Framingham State University student and learn more about the University today and life on campus? Just pick up the phone! Our student callers are reaching out to FSU alumni throughout the month of April to ask for your support of the Annual Fund, and to answer your questions about the University. We hope you’ll take a few minutes to speak with our student caller and pledge your support. Thank you!

Spring Alumni Magazine Hits Mailboxes in April!

The Spring 2012 Issue of Framingham State Magazine should arrive in mailboxes toward the middle of April. The feature story for the upcoming issue is on the many innovative and interesting internships students at FSU are participating in. Five students share their experiences.

The magazine will also include stories on an alumni couple who got married on campus, a trip five students made to the Cannes International Film Festival with Professor Robert Johnson, Jr., a profile on a young couple who recognizes the importance of supporting currents students and much, much more!

Acclaimed Author Cristina Rathbone to Speak About Life at MCI-Framingham

Acclaimed writer Cristina Rathbone will give a lecture titled “Women Behind Bars: Life Inside MCI-Framingham” on Wednesday April 18 at 7 p.m. in the Dwight Hall Performance Arts Center. Alumni are welcome to attend this free event.

Rathbone is author of A World Apart: Women, Prison, and Life Behind Bars – the definitive account of life at the oldest women’s prison in the United States, which is right here in Framingham just a few miles from campus.

Women are the fastest growing group of prison inmates in the United States; more than 100,000 are now locked up. Two-thirds of them are mothers, many of whom were the primary caretakers of their children when they were sent away. Seventy-three percent of incarcerated women are in prison for non-violent offenses.

Rathbone spent five years studying the oldest women’s prison in the U.S., MCI-Framingham. Her research shows why so much of the time people do not see the reality of women’s experiences behind bars. Too often we choose to believe that the more than 400 woman locked up in Framingham, like others across the U.S. are entirely different from us – cut off, set apart, and not worth our attention: someone else’s daughters; someone else’s mothers; strangers; people without stories. Rathbone’s talk will tell their powerful stories.

Campus Police Receive 140K Technology Grant

The Massachusetts Executive Office of Public Safety and Security has awarded Framingham State University a grant totaling $141,919 to pay for a new Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system, Dell laptop computers and other technology.

The new equipment is expected to decrease response times to service calls, streamline record keeping and better ensure safety on campus by improving the overall operation of the department.

The majority of the funding – about $109,000 – will go toward a CAD System from InterAct Public Safety Systems. The department currently utilizes an outdated system.

“Our current system is from a company not based in Massachusetts and because of that it’s not interoperable with other agencies in the state,” Chief Brad Medeiros said. “This new system will drastically improve our ability to receive and share important information.”

The new CAD will be linked to the Criminal Justice Information Service (CJIS) terminal as well as the state and national Registry of Motor Vehicle networks. These linkages will enable information - including subject’s name and vehicle information – to be pulled from the networks and backfilled in the correct fields in the CAD system. This should dramatically improve the department’s records management system.

The Office of Development and Alumni Relations is pleased to publish
@ Framingham State, our e-newsletter to keep alumni and friends of Framingham State better connected to the University. Each e-newsletter will feature information about upcoming events on campus. The University will continue to mail the biannual alumni magazine, as well as individual e-mails about specific events throughout the year. We hope you find this newsletter helpful and engaging.
