Accommodations Appeals Policy

Students with disabilities who are requesting academic accommodations should follow the procedures for submitting qualified documentation to the Director of Academic Support (See Students with Disabilities, Undergraduate Catalog.) Any student who believes that effective accommodations have not been provided or who believes his or her rights have been denied by reason of a disability is permitted to file a complaint.

Level I: Informal Complaint

Students who wish to challenge an accommodation or who have a complaint about the accommodations they are receiving may file an informal complaint with the Director of Academic Support.

A. Instructor/Faculty: Students who qualify for academic accommodations must present in a timely manner to their instructor the Documentation Confirmation letter from the Director of Academic Support. If a student believes the instructor is not providing the academic accommodation as indicated on the Documentation Confirmation letter, the student should make an appointment with the Director of Academic Support. The director will promptly evaluate the situation and attempt to find a resolution through informal means. The instructor will be notified and consulted for resolution.

B. Administrative: Students who believe they have not been given reasonable accommodations following review of documentation by the Director of Academic Support may file a complaint. If the complaint is against the Director of Academic Support, the complaint will be made directly to the Dean of Students or designee. The Dean of Students will evaluate the situation and attempt to find a resolution through informal means.

Level II:  Formal Complaint

If the complaint is unable to be resolved through informal discussion, or if the student disagrees with the outcome, a formal complaint may be filed with the Dean of Students.

A. Students should put their complaint in writing to the Dean of Students. The student’s name and address and a brief description of the issue in question should be included in the formal complaint.

B. The Dean of Students will conduct an independent and thorough review of the complaint and render a recommendation for resolution in writing. The Dean of Students’ written recommendation will be mailed to the student, the Vice President for Enrollment and Student Development, the Director of Academic Support, and the instructor(s), if relevant.

Level III:  Appeal

If the student disagrees with the resolution recommended by the Dean of Students, he or she may appeal the recommendation in writing within 10 business days of receipt of the Dean of Students’ decision to the Vice President for Enrollment and Student Development.

A. The Vice President will conduct an independent and thorough review of the complaint and the Dean of Students’ recommendation. The Vice President may render a decision on the appeal or refer the appeal to the Academic Accommodations Advisory Board (AAAB).

B. The Academic Accommodations Advisory Board, comprised of faculty (excluding any instructor involved in the complaint), administrators, and a student representative, provides ongoing review of practice by the Office of Academic Support. At the direction of the Vice President, at least three members of the Academic Accommodations Advisory Board will convene a special meeting within 10 business days of receipt of the appeal. AAAB will conduct an independent and thorough review of the complaint and, if necessary, meet with the complainant and other parties involved in the complaint.

C. A written summary of the resolution will be provided by the AAAB and distributed to the student, the Vice President, the Dean of Students, the Director of Academic Support, and the instructor(s), if relevant. All procedures followed and decisions made by the AAAB are subject to review and final authority by the Vice President for Enrollment and Student Development and the President.
