Counseling Center Services

Counseling Center services are free to all matriculated
Framingham State College students.

 INDIVIDUAL COUNSELING
Students meet with a counselor on a one-to-one basis to address a variety of concerns.  In the initial meeting your concerns will be explored fully and an agreement will be reached between you and your counselor about the best approach to your problem. Couples and family counseling are available when needed.

 WALK-IN TIME
The Counseling Center Walk-in time is Monday through Friday, 2 - 3 p.m. You don't need an appointment and a counselor is always available to see you.

 CRISIS SUPPORT
If you are having a psychiatric crisis from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, you can come to the Counseling Center without an appointment.  If you have a psychiatric emergency after 5 p.m. or on the weekend, please call
Advocates Psychiatric Emergency Services at (508) 872-3333.

 PSYCHIATRIC CONSULTATION
Psychiatric consultation is available to students who are being seen by a counselor at the Counseling Center.  Two consultants are available to work with the students of Framingham State College: a psychiatrist and a psychiatric nurse specialist.   A counselor may suggest a student see a consultant to assess their possible use of medication or to explore treatment alternatives. If the student does decide to try medication, regular follow-up sessions with the psychiatric consultant are provided in conjunction with ongoing therapy with their counselor at the Counseling Center.

 OUTREACH PROGRAMS and CLASSROOM PRESENTATIONS
For RD's, RA's, faculty or student clubs/organizations, the Counseling Center is the perfect resource if you're planning an outreach program.

We'll be glad to come to your location and present workshops on a variety of subjects.  This is an easy way to provide useful and interesting information to groups of students. Past topics include: stress management, eating disorders, healthy relationships, body image, GLBT issues, assertiveness, and more.

 COMMUNITY SUPPORT
You may also wish to invite us into your classroom or residence hall for community support when an unexpected crisis occurs or to speak about any mental health related topic.

 PARENT, FACULTY, STAFF CONSULTATION
If you have a question or concern about your son or daughter, about a student in your classroom, or a fellow student, the Counseling Center is available to you.  A counselor will be here to advise you and discuss your concerns. Parents and faculty, please see our guides:  Parenting Your College Student and A Guide for Faculty, Staff and Parents.

 GROUP COUNSELING
The Counseling Center offers group sessions for students who would benefit from working on their concerns and issues in a group setting. Two examples of group topics are Interpersonal Relationships and Adult Children of Alcoholics. If you are interested in participating in group therapy, please discuss this option with your counselor or contact the Counseling Center.

 RESOURCE MATERIALS
Available for students: a lending library of books, informational handouts and articles, all on mental health related issues.

 GRADUATE INTERNSHIPS
The Counseling Center provides clinical internships for Masters in Social Work students who are in their final year of study and clinical externships/practicum's for doctoral candidates in Clinical Psychology.  For further information, please contact the Field Department of your school to see if an interview with the Counseling Center is appropriate.
