Low-Literacy
and Bilingual Students (3) - Concentrates
on increasing the participant’s understanding of the academic,
linguistic, and sociocultural issues surrounding students who speak a
language other than English at home.
The focus of the course will be particularly on middle and high
school students who come to school with low literacy skills in their
native language and English. Through
the format of the study group, participants will collaboratively work on a
written report containing recommendations for implementing sound
educational practices for this group of students. |

Culture, Society, and Art (1) - Designed
for educators who teach China as part of their grade level curriculum.
This course will be a balance of activities, content, artifacts,
and visual experiences that can be enjoyed on an adult level and then
shared with students. Guest
speakers will make presentations during three class sessions. |

America: Its Culture and History (2) - Considers
the rise and fall of the Incas, Mayas, and Aztecs as well as current Latin
American issues and the impact of Latin America on the United States and
the world. The course
provides a structure for interdisciplinary curriculum planning across
history/social studies and foreign languages. |

an overview of Indian culture, society and art. Topics include religion, philosophy, music, art and dance,
and cuisine. |

and economic development in Asian history.
Special emphasis is placed on China and Japan and their development
from traditional societies to powerful modern states in the world. |

Frameworks (4) - Explores
techniques and strategies for incorporating global and multicultural
perspectives into the K-12 classrooms via the Massachusetts Curriculum
Frameworks. The course covers
content information; teaching resources; hands-on teaching activities; and
lesson plans emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches to diversity.
Theories and concepts relating to global and multicultural
education are introduced. |
