14.702 Low Literacy and Bi-Lingual Students (3) - Concentrates on increasing the participant’s understanding of the academic, linguistic, and sociocultural issues surrounding students who speak a language other than English at home.  The focus of the course will be particularly on middle and high school students who come to school with low literacy skills in their native language and English.  Through the format of the study group, participants will collaboratively work on a written report containing recommendations for implementing sound educational practices for this group of students.
14.725 Spelling Matters: Strategies for Assessing and Teaching (Gr. 2-6) (1) - Explores the intricacies of spelling development as well as ways of collecting and analyzing children’s spelling attempts.  Analysis of the strategies which young writers use while spelling will serve to anchor discussions about appropriate instructional mediations.  Students will examine current thinking and research about spelling instruction.
14.726 Successful Beginnings: An Early Literacy Course for Teachers of Students in Gr. K-1 (2) - Explores classroom practices, which promote early reading and writing successes.  The principles of guided reading and writing are discussed.  Participants also discuss assessment techniques to meet individual students’ literacy needs.
14.773 The Journal: The Uses of Creative Writing to Enhance Curriculum (3) - An online course that explores the uses of the creative journal in the classroom to complement and enhance study of any subject area.  Various creative writing techniques are explored and several journal-writing exercises are designed which can be applied to individual teacher’s subject areas.
14.776 Understanding Literacy: A Balanced Approach (2) - Designed to familiarize new teachers with a uniform set of beliefs and strategies for implementing a balanced developmental approach.  Participants gain an understanding of the current literacy philosophies and their impact upon student learning, as well as provide practical strategies and instructional approaches for teachers to implement in classrooms.  In addition, emphasis is directed toward implementation of the new authentic assessment program, including use of portfolio, criteria, and system standards in the Language Arts.

Literacy and Character Education; A K-5 Integration (4) - Designed to assist educators teaching character education through the standards of the English Language Arts and Health Frameworks.  Participants will discuss and write about selected pieces of adult and children’s literature where characters are making important decisions.  Teachers will learn to select literature with themes that provoke thinking and provide insight into universal human emotions and dilemmas.  They will also learn to teach specific skills and strategies to ensure that students are able to interpret the meaning of literary works by using critical lenses and analytical techniques.

15.703 Designing an Effective Writing and Thinking Program for the Elementary Grades (3) - Focuses on age-appropriate strategies and techniques for motivating, encouraging, and improving student writing and thinking.  The course addresses the following topics: using writing to develop literacy, to communicate with others, and to reflect on learning as well as one’s awareness of the world; identifying and developing the “ three critical elements” of an effective writing program; using a writing portfolio to promote growth in writing; helping students internalize the writing process by modeling strategies for drafting, sharing, revising, and editing; choosing key thinking and writing skills for your students; structuring the classroom for sharing activities that make students resources to one another; using a variety of writing activities and projects to enhance learning in all content areas; and evaluating student writing as well as planning for strategic teaching.
15.724 Written Expression: Framing Your Thoughts (2) - Designed to teach students, grades one through adult, sentence structure and paragraph development.  The course emphasizes direct teaching of concepts and skills, presented in their dependent order and delivered through multisensory strategies, materials and activities.
15.726 Using the Language Arts Frameworks in Everyday Teaching (1) - Focuses on understanding and interpreting the Language Arts Framework guiding principles and strands.  Lesson plans are designed based on current research and practice.

Effective Skills Centers to Support Literacy Learning (3) - Addresses ways for K-8 teachers to prepare interactive skills curricula that give children extensive practice in reading and mathematics for skill reinforcement.  Participants also learn management techniques to develop self-directed learners.  This multi-level approach to skills instruction is shared through teacher-designed skills centers.  Participants are required to develop components for skills learning.

15.733 The Interactive Reading and Mathematics Curriculum (3) - Demonstrates how to involve children in everyday reading and mathematics activities.  Strategies for making literacy connections to reading and mathematics are shared through children’s work, teacher designed materials, interactive classroom centers, and techniques that involve student feedback.  Teachers are required to develop their own curriculum materials.
15.744 Multifaceted Reading Strategies for At-Risk Learners (3) - Focuses on developing effective strategies and techniques for motivating, encouraging, and improving student’s reading abilities.  Designed specifically for teachers in grades K-3, Special Education Teachers, and Title I/Remedial Reading Teachers.
15.752 Children’s Literature in the Elementary Classroom (3) - Includes the following: exploring guidelines for evaluating children’s literature; understanding and selecting literature that recognizes the different developmental needs of elementary school children; examining the changing world of children’s books; helping children make literature connections to their own lives; developing a literature reading program for students; and studying the works of selected authors and illustrators.
15.755 Strengthening Students’ Writing through Writer’s Workshop (2) - Designed to help participants implement writer’s workshop in the classroom.  Participants engage children in both expressive and content related writings that are analyzed and discussed.
15.759 Literacy Development for Students (3) - Examines current theory and research on secondary school literacy development theory.  Content includes the writing process, the place of traditional grammar instruction, and new methods of teaching literary analysis.
15.761 Processing Language Development in the Classroom (3) - Designed for educators grades K-8  to engage students in the language that is all around them.  Participants share methods to create a classroom environment that fosters language development.  Writing experiences that develop solid language skills are demonstrated, along with the use of literature as a method of language modeling.
15.762 Effective Skills Centers to Supplement Literacy Learning (3) - Prepares K-8 teachers to develop interactive skills curricula that give children extensive practice in reading.  Management techniques to develop self-directed learners are considered.  This multi-level approach to skills instruction will be shared through teacher-designed skills centers.  Participants will be required to develop center components for skills learning.
15.763 Dimensions of Learning (3) - Introduces participants to a learning-centered framework for instructional planning that translates the latest research on cognition and learning into practical classroom strategies.  Participants explore the five kinds of thinking known to be associated with learning, including demonstrating positive attitudes and perceptions about learning, acquiring and integrating knowledge, extending and refining knowledge, using knowledge meaningfully, and applying productive habits of mind.
15.764 Dimensions of Learning in Action (3) - Extends the concepts introduced in Dimensions in Learning. Students examine the role of performance assessment in classrooms using Dimensions of Learning (DoL) concepts and tools. The course emphasizes the reasoning processes as critical to the development of competent learners.  A considerable portion of the course is devoted to writing instructional units and building quality assessments for use in the classroom.
15.776 Successful Reading Strategies for Reading Delayed, Disabled, and Language Learning Disabled Students (3) - Integrates both SGM and phonemic awareness within existing reading problems, including whole language, basal and linguistic.  Invited speakers with classroom expertise in the areas of inclusionary laws, computer technology, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) discuss the effect of these issues on both special and general education programs.
16.701 A Balanced Approach to Literacy (1) - Designed to assist teachers with the implementation of a uniform set of beliefs and strategies for a balanced developmental literacy approach.
16.719 Integrating Poetry into the Elementary School Curriculum (1) - Designed to help teachers share knowledge about the world of children’s poetry and the ways in which it can enhance literacy in the classroom.
16.721 Project Read – Phonology: Decoding for Students in Grades 1-4 (2) - Focuses on a basic decoding approach based on systematic phonics.  The course deals with the direct teaching of the concepts and skills of the phonology of our language.  It employs multisensory strategies, materials, and activities that make the concept of language concrete.
16.748 Integrating Reading and Writing Strategies (3) - Designed to demonstrate processes of development of curriculum where reading and writing are extensions of each other.  Literature samples, children’s writing, learning center activities and writing environments are shared.  Participants develop appropriate curriculum for their classrooms.

Journal Preparation for the Classroom (3) - Combines the disciplines of language and visual arts.  Participants produce their own bound journals working within the Writing Process and drawing upon connections to portfolios.  Participants are expected to implement this knowledge into immediate classroom use.

16.764 Enhancing Teaching Skills (3) - Designed to help teachers and educational leaders view teaching as a skillful performance.  Teaching skills are identified from a knowledge base of teaching and studied through the use of videotape exemplars.  For teachers and administrators, there are many practical insights into teaching practices as well as techniques for guiding feedback, coaching, and conducting classroom evaluations.  In addition to mastering a knowledge base of teaching, students are expected to acquire skills in observing, scripting, labeling, interpreting, and coaching.
16.777 Integrating Poetry Across the Curriculum (3) - Designed to help elementary teachers along with media, resource, and reading specialists increase and apply their knowledge of children’s poetry to enrich instruction in all areas of the curriculum.  The course will include an overview of forms and elements in published poetry, information helpful for MCAS preparation, and methods to improve student poetry writing and understanding.
16.778 Helping Children Become Effective Readers and Writers (4) - Focuses on the reading and writing components of the English Language Arts Curriculum Framework and on the History and Social Science Curriculum Framework relating to the American Revolutionary War.  Participants focus on reading and writing strategies in the content areas as well as on developing writing prompts.  Time is devoted to creating writing activities and prompts to be used with students in the classroom.
16.786 Developing Literacy First (3) - Explores techniques and strategies for a balanced literacy classroom.  Topics include: understanding how children learn to read and write, brain research and literacy development, assessment, and successful classroom management.
16.787 Integrated Bilingual Settings: Theory and Practice (3) - Focuses on the theoretical and practical issues involved with bringing together students from a bilingual and standard curriculum classroom.  Topics include bilingualism and second language acquisition, classroom organization in integrated settings, and developing positive cross-cultural relationships.
