DISABILITY SERVICES OFFICE (DSO)

Access to Abilities - Equal Access Means Equal Opportunities
Overview of Services

Disability Services Office (D.S.O.) Overview

The Disability Services Office is responsible for the coordination of disability support services on campus.  The D.S.O. will advocate for students with disabilities on any on-campus issue, to ensure that they have complete and equal access to all the programs and services offered by Framingham State College (FSC).  For academic assistance, the D.S.O. works in conjunction with the Center for Academic Support and Advising (CASA) which provides academic support services for students with disabilities.  The D.S.O. slogan is Access to Abilities- Equal Access Means Equal Opportunities.  We believe that students with disabilities, given the appropriate support services, can achieve and succeed in all that Framingham State College has to offer, both academically and socially.

Services Provided

Interpreters

Deaf or hard of hearing students who need interpreters, or have their own interpreters, can contact the D.S.O. which will arrange for payment of these services.

C-Print Captionists

A C-Print Captionist learns to summarize what is occurring in the classroom (the instructors' lecture, the student discussions, etc.) as it is happening.  The students are able to see what the captionist types, either on a laptop computer if there are only one or two deaf students in the class) or on a large TV monitor (if there are several deaf students in the class).  The summary that is created is a regular computer file that can be edited and printed for distribution to the students within a few hours after the class ends.

Note Takers

The D.S.O. has a procedure for providing note takers upon request.  Note takers are paid minimum wage per hour for each class.

Recording of Textbooks/ College Publications

Students who are blind or have print disabilities, and need their class textbooks recorded, should contact the D.S.O.  The D.S.O. will assist students in obtaining recorded books from Recordings for the Blind and Dyslexic (RFB&D).  If the books are not available from the RFB&D, the D.S.O. will provided recorded textbooks for students. Upon request, the D.S.O. will provide tape and Braille copies of any college publications such as: Access to Abilities- a newsletter and a brochure put out by the D.S.O.

MetroWest Radio Reading Service (M.R.R.S.)

The D.S.O. also provides the MetroWest Radio Reading Service (M.R.R.S.) through the FSC student radio station, WDJM 91.3 FM.  This service, for the blind, visually impaired, and persons with disabilities is an affiliate of the Talking Information Center (TIC).  The TIC network provides 24 hours a day, 7 days a week of statewide programming, reading newspapers such as, The Boston Globe, The Herald, books etc. as well as many other programs.  The MRRS provides the reading of local newspapers such as, The MetroWest Daily News, The Tab, The Natick Bulletin and other community newspapers as well as college publications such as The Gatepost.  Please call the D.S.O. for more information, or if interested in volunteering or obtaining a receiver.
