Advancing to Professional Licensure with Endorsement

Follow the steps below to apply for your Professional license to ensure timely processing of your licensure application.  Please note that FSU may endorse candidates for one Professional license only.

The following M.Ed. programs are approved, by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, to advance the academic teacher associated license from Initial to Professional.

  • M.Ed. Art
  • M.Ed. Early Childhood
  • M.Ed. Elementary
  • M.Ed. English 
  • M.Ed. History
  • M.Ed. Mathematics
  • M.Ed. Spanish

The M.Ed. in Literacy and Language is approved to advance the following licenses from Initial to Professional:

  • Early Childhood
  • Elementary
  • English 5-8
  • English 8-12
  • Moderate Disabilities PreK-8
  • Moderate Disabilities 5-12

NOTE: If you are using one of the degree programs listed above to advance a license other than one associated with the degree, from Initial to Professional, please see instructions for applying independently.

Applying for Your License

  • Complete the Endorsement Request Form and return it to the Office of Graduate Studies in Dwight Hall 204.  Please make sure you include a copy of your Initial license with your Endorsement Request form.
  • Order an official copy of your transcript from Framingham State University. On the request form, indicate that you want the transcript sent, to the address below, after you've completed your degree.  We will submit your transcript to the state on your behalf during the endorsement process.

Go to the Licensure area at the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education web site. Log on to your ELAR profile area and select the option to Advance to the next level license. Follow the prompts to update your education information. Then, use the following to apply for your Professional license:

When asked which route you are following, select the option which indicates you have completed an approved master's degree program. Complete the remaining screens to apply for your license.

  • In addition to your master's degree, you must also provide verification of three years of employment under the Initial license you are advancing to Professional and completion of the required induction and mentoring activities. Please send your completed verification form to:

    The licensure officer will submit this form and your transcript to the Licensure Office at the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE).
  • If you've had a name change (e.g. marriage, divorce, other legal proceeding) while in (or after) your licensure program, you must submit a name change form with appropriate documentation of the name change to the DESE.
The licensure officer endorses the applications of candidates who have completed all program requirements. The electronic endorsements are completed approximately four to five weeks after the graduation dates in May, August, December and January. To expedite your endorsement (and the licensing process at the DESE), please make sure you have
  1. set up your ELAR profile,
  2. applied for the license, and
  3. paid for the license

by your graduation date. Once your endorsement is complete, you will receive a confirmation letter via U.S. Mail.
