A career in writing may involve both writing and editing positions. The field includes technical writer, business writer, copy writer, or journalist, as well as editor at a publishing company, newspaper, or magazine. English majors continually practice the analytic, research, and critical thinking skills required for many of these positions. Courses in the Professional Writing or Journalism sequences or a concentration in Journalism or Professional Writing are excellent preparation for these careers.
Majors with a concentration in Writing or Creative Writing may also seek careers in many kinds of businesses or organizations, including publishing or non-profit organizations. English Department faculty encourage talented writers of poetry and prose to continue developing their abilities and to consider graduate study.
