Extension Cords

Questions arise on occasion regarding the proper use of extension cords on campus.  Extension cord use is discussed in the National Electric Code (NEC).   In short, extension cords are only to be used for temporary purposes. They do not replace the need for installation of outlets and proper wiring where necessary.

Extension cords should NEVER be run under rugs, mattresses, through doorways, or windows.  They must be protected from damage.

Use only 3-pronged extension cords when connecting electrical items that have 3-pronged plugs.

Splicing and "home repairs" of extension cords are not permitted.

It is recommended to not use extension cords.  There are three alternatives:

1.  Move electrical device closer to an electric receptacle.
2.  Request that a new receptacle be installed near the device.
3.  Use a power strip with a circuit breaker.

If you have any questions, please contact Maureen Bagge Fowler, Environmental Health & Safety Coordinator at extension 4633.
