PRINCIPLES OF APPAREL CONSTRUCTION

(FASH140)

 

 

COURSE DESCRIPTION

A laboratory course in which students use commercial patterns to produce completed garments.  Emphasis is on materials selection, construction techniques, and quality standards.  A notebook of basic assembly techniques is produced.  Students with extensive construction experience may petition for exemption from this course.

 

COURSE OBJECTIVES

   Gaining factual knowledge (terminology, methods, classifications, trends).

   Learning fundamental principles and generalizations

   Developing specific skills, competencies and points of view needed by

             professionals in the field.

   Developing creative capacities.

 

Through readings, class discussion, and laboratory experience the student will be able to:

 

            define and utilize clothing construction terminology

demonstrate the use of basic construction equipment and techniques

choose and prepare fabric for use in construction

demonstrate use and care of the sewing machine

correctly take and interpret body measurements for figure type and size

measure and alter a commercial pattern prior to construction

layout, cut, and mark pattern pieces prior to construction

evaluate and choose seams, finishes, interfacing, closures, hemming methods, hand stitches, and machine stitches suitable for the fabric and design of a product.

create a finished product that aesthetically integrates fiber, fabric, finish, and design lines.

REQUIRED MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT  (*items needed by second class session)

 

*Fabric shears, and paper scissors

*Tracing wheel and dressmaker carbon

*Bobbin (available from instructor)

  Ring binder (1-1 ˝”) for Sample Notebook

*Straight pins and pin holder

  Hand Needles(7,8,9, or 10 sharps)

*Sewing gauge and/or ruler

  Fabric & notions for 3 garments

*Seam ripper

  Scotch tape

*Fabric, thread, notions for Sample  

      Notebook—provided by instructor

  Hangers for garment

 

                                            

ASSIGNMENTS, EXAMS, AND GRADING

 20%      Construction Techniques Assignment (Sample Notebook).

 

   5%      Alterations Techniques Assignment.

 

 20%      Skirt Construction Assignment -- Garment Project #1.

A skirt with zipper, waistband, hook and eye closure.  Fabric must  be medium weight woven, solid color or small overall print.  Finished garment must be on a hanger.

 

 25%      Shirt Construction Assignment -- Garment Project #2

A blouse, shirt, or top with a flat or rolled collar, set-in sleeves, buttons, and buttonholes.  Fabric must be woven.  Finished garment must be on a hanger.

 

 10%      Knit Construction Assignment -- Garment Project #3

A simple dress, shirt, bathrobe, pants, hat and glove set, etc.  Fabric must be knit. Finished garment must be on a hanger.

 

 20%      Final Exam

CLASS GUIDELINES

CLASS ATTENDANCE IS REQUIRED.  The construction of all projects must take place during the scheduled class time.  Any construction work completed outside of class time must have prior approval by the instructor or it will not be accepted.  (Please be aware that this course is a prerequisite to the upper level design courses in which you will be required to complete garment construction projects outside of class time; it is recommended that you have your own sewing machine by the time you enroll in those classes.)

 

All assignments and projects are due at specific times.  All assignments and projects will lose 1/3 letter grade if handed in after the specified time and date and will lose an additional 1/3 letter grade for each day late including weekends and non-class days.  Arrangements for handing in late items due to a valid reason such as serious illness, must be approved prior to the due date and be accompanied by a doctor's note or verification.

 

You may work in the lab whenever it is not being used for a class.  Please honor the “Rules for the Lab”.

 

At the end of each class period you must return all equipment to its proper area and leave your area neat and clean.

 

To protect students' fabrics, food and beverages are prohibited in the Apparel Design Studio.
