DESCRIPTION:

A non-credit presentation required of Fashion Design and Retailing majors in the Apparel Design Concentration.  The portfolio presentation must demonstrate the ability to:

         

                    design for a variety of garment categories;

                    integrate the components of design, fabric and end use;

                    assemble ideas in an aesthetic and professional format.

 

 

REQUIREMENTS:

The portfolio must include the following items organized and displayed in a portfolio in a professional quality binder.

 

     1.  PHOTOGRAPHS:  Include prints of professional quality of at least three

          garments completed within the major.  Photographs must be 5” x 7”, 8” x 10”,   

          or larger.

 

     2.  SKETCHES:  Include 10 – 20 sketches including those of the three garments   

          photographed.  Sketches must be at least 8 ˝ “ x 11”, may be black and white   

          or color, and must be accompanied by fabric swatches.  A flat sketch for at

          least one garment must be included.  Include descriptions and detail sketches

          where necessary.  Sketches must include designs in at least three different

          categories, e.g., coats (outerwear), suits, daytime dresses, evening wear, active

          sportswear, lingerie, children’s wear, clothing for the handicapped, career

          apparel, etc.

 

     3.  GARMENTS:  Include two garments showing advanced construction skills. 

          The pattern for at least one of these must have been made using flat pattern

          techniques or draping.

 

     4.  RESUME:  Include a complete resume suitable for applying to a position in 

          the apparel design and retail industry.

 

 

 The portfolio may include any additional material that demonstrates student’s competence (e.g. flat pattern work, original fabric designs, written material demonstrating creative and/or technical ability, and visual/media presentations.

 

 

     REVIEW DATES:

 

      Preliminary First Review:  Beginning of February, SENIOR YEAR (or Sept. for Dec. graduates).

Materials and ideas for the portfolio must be submitted to the Fashion Design and Retail

ing faculty.  At this time the student must have at least four sketches, the professional

binder, and an established format.

 

      Final Evaluation:  End of April, SENIOR YEAR (or End of November for December graduates).

The portfolio must be completed and formally presented by the student to the Fashion

Design and Retailing faculty.
