Capstone Thesis Form

You must first select an on-campus thesis advisor who has expertise on topics related to your proposed project.  The advisor may be from any FSU department, the student must ask for their participation prior to developing the proposal.

Prepare a well-constructed proposal following the guidelines below.  The proposal must be reviewed and approved by your on-campus internship advisor before submitting it to the committee.

Background Introduction
• Definition of problem topic
• Summary of current state of knowledge on problem topic, including citations from the primary literature (i.e. professional publications and, where appropriate they should be peer-reviewed; not websites)
• Clear statement of the question to be answered by student’s thesis project

• Objectively describe the significance and relevance of the problem topic and the project question to the field of Environmental Science and current environmental issues.
• Elaborate on the significance and relevance of the proposed project experience to your own personal career goals.

Project Methodology
• Clearly describe the type of data that will be collected
(e.g. measurements, categorical responses, etc.).
• Clearly describe the method by which you will collect your data
(e.g. proposed sample sizes, manner of subject/site selection, controls, etc.).
• Clearly describe the manner in which the data will be analyzed
(e.g. state comparisons or associations sought, statistics that will be used, etc.).

Project Presentation & Assessment
• Explain how you will present your final conclusions to the Environmental Science committee, FSU campus, and relevant local community.  This should include both a written and an oral component.
