route to initial license in
Health/Family and Consumer Science
Students typically
take Field Study I
during their sophomore year. They are usually placed in local elementary or
middle school's, grades K-6, and spend one morning per week observing a veteran
teacher instructing health. During the Fall semester of their senior year,
students will be involved in Professional
Preparation and Field
Study II. This
includes six hours of course work per week on campus plus one day per week at
their field study site. Towards the end of the semester students are
involved in teaching a few classes.

Placement:
Students work with the Instructor for both field study placements.
Placements are decided upon location, the students preference, and a good
personality match with the cooperating teacher at the site.
Requirements for
Field Study and Student Teaching
- Cumulative quality point
average (QPA) of at least 2.70 in all education courses and Psychology of
Development (42.200).
- A minimum of 2.70 cumulative
quality point average (QPA) in all courses at Framingham State College is
required.
- Students make their first
formal application for the field experience by applying for Education in
American Society with Field Study I (14.200). This is done by Oct.1 st or
Feb. 1st of the prior semester.
- Undergraduate and
post-Baccalaureate teacher license students must pass the
"Communication and Literacy skills" component of the Massachusetts
Test for Education Licensure ( MTEL) prior to entering Professional
Preparation and Field Study II for Health/Family and Consumer Sciences
(14.317).
- Professional Preparation and
Field Study II is offered during Fall semester. Students take this course
during their senior year. It has two course credits and includes class on
campus and one full day a week at a school site.
- Prior to beginning the
Student Teaching practicum ( 14.417 and 14.418) all students must
demonstrate competency in their subject matter field for licensure by
achieving a passing score on the appropriate subject area subtest of the
MTEL or an equivalent test.
- Student Teaching (14.417 and
14.418 ) is done during Spring semester.
- To be recommended by the
College for licensure a student must have achieved an overall QPA of at
least 2.70, and must meet all department and college requirements for the
teacher education program .
