DEPO PROVERA INJECTION

depot Medroxyprogesterone acetate

Depo provera is a high effective and reversible method of birth control. It is a progesterone only based medication. Therefore, it may be used in women where estrogen is contraindicated.  Depo  reduces the volume of menstrual bleeding and reduces the risk of endometrial cancer. Depo is given by deep intramuscularly or (IM) injection and is effective for 3-4 months.  There is a lower dose depot that is administered subcutaneous (under the skin), called depo proverasc104. This injection contains 33% less progesterone than the IM injection. This form of depo has been approved for use in treatment of endometriosis.

How does it work? it's primary mechanism of action is prohibiting ovulation. It may also cause changes to the lining of the uterus and cervical mucus, thereby decreasing sperm transportation and implantation.

Amenorrhea and irregular bleeding are the most common side effects of depo provera. Headaches, depression and weight gain may also be related to use of progesterone.  Bone loss due to lowered estrogen levels while on depo provera are a concern. Any women on depo should take calcium supplements and add weight bearing activities to their exercise routine.
