Diarrhea

Diarrhea is defined when one has loose, watery stools more than three times in one day. Most often, diarrhea is self-limiting and will resolve on its own without any special treatment. However, prolonged diarrhea can be a sign of other problems. 

Causes of Diarrhea include:

  • bacterial infections, most often by consuming contaminated food or water

  • viral infections

  • food intolerances

  • parasites

  • reactions to certain medications

  • intestinal diseases

  • functional bowel disorders, also known as irritable bowel syndrome

Symptoms:

  • abdominal cramping or pain

  • bloating

  • nausea

  • urgent need to use bathroom

  • fever

  • bloody stools

 Also, diarrhea can cause dehydration due to a lack of proper fluid balance. Dehydration can be a dangerous health situation and you should seek medical attention if you are suspect of this condition.

Signs of Dehydration:

  • thirst

  • less frequent urination

  • dry skin

  • fatigue

  • headache

  • lightheadedness

How to Avoid Dehydration:

  • clear fluids, such as water, clear broths, jello

When to See a Clinician:

  • severe abdomen or rectum pain

  • fever greater than 101.4

  • bloody or black, tarry stools

  • signs of dehydration

  • diarrhea longer than 3 days
