Aline Davis

Associate Professor

Dr. Davis teaches Human Anatomy & Physiology, Principles of Human Physiology, Introduction to Human Biology, Neurobiology and Biopsychology. Her research focuses on the effects of hormones on brain development.

As technology use and availability increases, new and innovative tools have become a part of the university education system. But their actual value to the learning process, if any, is not well understood. Dr. Aline Davis, Biology professor is investigating the usefulness of the Apple iPad2 in an upper division laboratory Biology class. The study examines several technological enhancements in teaching and learning, including: textbook format, audio recording, personal response systems and the mobile Blackboard app. Student participation is on a volunteer basis. Dr. Davis, Project lead, ETO Instructional Technologist Clair Waterbury and members of the ITS and Henry Whittemore Library staff meet regularly to support the project.

Blackboard Learn

Blackboard Learn is used at Framingham State University to enhance student learning. Faculty and students connect in online and web-enhanced classes anytime, anywhere there is an internet connection. The recent upgrade delivers significant improvements to the user interface, enhanced collaboration tools, and new social learning and teaching tools. Blackboard Learn is also accessible from a mobile device.

Extended Blackboard support services are available 24-7. Users may also visit the Blackboard Online Resource Center to chat with a technician and view resource information or on-demand videos.

Blackboard Mobile

Mobile Learn provides faculty, students, and staff with anywhere, anytime access to Blackboard. Students and faculty view course information, interact on class blogs, view course deadlines, and more from their mobile device. Get it here.

Workshops

Education technology is an integral part of the teaching and learning environment at Framingham State University. Each year, the Education Technology Office (ETO) hosts initiatives to support this effort. Most workshops are offered in the Leonhard Lab (Hemenway Hall G07) throughout the semester. Scheduled events are communicated through email and posted on the Education Technology web pages.

Marion Scherner Leonhard Lab

The Marion Scherner Leonhard Multimedia Technology Lab in Hemenway Hall G07 is open to all faculty to explore the use of education technology. The lab is most often used by ETO to deliver technology focused professional development workshops and specialized training. When the Leonhard Lab is not in use it is available for faculty and staff to explore technology or meet with ETO staff.

Quality Matters

Framingham State University adopted Quality Matters as our Online and Blended Learning course design strategy in 2010. Faculty members participating in the program meet regularly throughout the semester to review the QM standards in advance of re-designing their course for an internal QM review. Conversations are led by Dr. Pat Luoto, Consumer Sciences Department, and Robin Robinson and Silka Hermeling from the Education Technology Office.

Technology Teaching and Learning Grant

Teaching and Learning Technology Program funds are awarded annually to a Framingham State faculty or staff member interested in using 21st century technologies for the purpose of "designing new instructional techniques and programs". Preference will be given to proposals that explore new possibilities through pilot projects, as well as trial and error on a small scale, in order to test innovative ideas and gain insights that can be used to inform prospective implementation and support on a larger scale.

Institutional Purchases

Faculty and staff will receive a computer system upon arrival on campus. Faculty receive a laptop computer, docking station, monitor, keyboard, and mouse. Staff receive a complete desktop system.

Educational Discounts

ITS has worked with several vendors to secure educational and employee purchase discounts. Employees are privileged to these discounts from vendors such as Lenovo, Dell, and Apple.

Personal Purchases

Employees have the opportunity to receive the same discounts afforded to students on select software items through a partnership with Microsoft and e-Academy.
FSU also has a software agreement with Adobe to provide a license of Adobe Creative Suite to all employees free of charge, as well as site licenses for other items including many Microsoft products and several business & educational software items. These items must be uninstalled following university departure.

LiveText

LiveText Accreditation Data Management and e-Portfolio platform supports the University NCATE accreditation initiative. The University’s undergraduate, post baccalaureate, and graduate programs are using LiveText to meet NCATE preconditions, collect assessment data for the Specialized Professional Association (SPA) reports, develop a conceptual framework, and more.

Atomic Learning

On-demand video tutorials provide faculty, students, and staff with access to over 130 common applications and technology resources including Blackboard Learn, Windows 7, Podcast, Photoshop, iMovie, Office 2010, iPad, training and more.

CafeScribe

Follett’s digital textbook platform integrates with Blackboard Learn. Students use the resource to read their text book and collaborate with peers and professors directly from Blackboard.

IT Library Collaboration

The Library staff and ITS work in teams to improve the services provided through increased collaboration that will better support academic programs, and magnify the collective contribution to the University’s mission.

Technology Enhanced Campus (TEC)

New technology is monitored by FSU as part of addressing unmet and anticipated needs associated with the academic and general purpose use of campus facilities. The TEC Task Force conducts annual evaluations of all technology enhanced spaces.

Mobile Task Force

The Task Force provides the University Technology Council with recommendations related to mobile computing technology. Focusing on three areas: Operations, Mobile Footprint, and technology in the Teaching and Learning environment.

Laptop Information and Purchasing

All students at FSU are required to own a wireless laptop. The intent of FSU’s laptop program is to bring technology-rich tools and resources into the curriculum and help instructors to expand and deepen the learning experiences of their students both inside and out of the curriculum. Each year, the University secures a competitive price (based on best value, warranty and service) for a recommended laptop for students and the University to purchase.

myFramingham portal connects all students with a secure access to personalized information and the ability to complete self-service transactions online. Course schedules, personal information, grades, financial aid and account balance information can be obtained from anywhere on the world-wide web after logging in. Students also are provided the ability to register for courses and pay bills online.

DegreeWorks

DegreeWorks accessed through myFramingham is the University’s system for tracking student progress. DegreeWorks provides a comprehensive set of web-based academic advising, degree audit, and transfer articulation tools to help students and their advisors negotiate your institution’s curriculum requirements.

FSU Alerts is one system used to notify the community about emergencies or weather closures.

Classrooms & Labs

All of Framingham State's general education classrooms are technology enhanced with; at the minimum, a projection system and dedicate wireless access point. As we upgrade our campus to have more technology enhanced learning spaces, we are constantly evaluating the technology needs of the community in order to make sure that all available technologies that are relevant to the success of faculty and students. There are two General Computer Labs on campus as well as several more, specialized, labs across campus.

Network

There are currently over 300 access points across campus and all Residence Halls and classrooms are fully wireless accessible. Hardwired connections are also available in most student rooms and in common areas, as a back-up or for faster more reliable network access. As a new feature, optional monthly broadband internet services have been added to the Residence Halls for any student that wants their very own dedicated internet connection.

The network is open to all students, faculty and staff and is easily accessible.

Printing

21 network printers are located across campus for student printing. ITS has implemented a print management system that helps students monitor their print jobs, enables access to networked printers, and increases document security. Each student at FSU is allotted 350 pages per semester for black and white or color printing and 100 pages per intersession and summer session.

Student Employment

Each semester, ITS employs roughly 25-35 students. Employment can be at the Technology Resource Centers, Copy Center, Networking or Education Technology Office. Student employees have the opportunity to learn and grow within the organization through a tiered position program. On average our student staff work anywhere between 10 and 20 hours a week. Most hiring takes place over the summer with a multi-day training prior to the start of the semester. Addition hiring takes place during the semester as needed.

One on One

Any user that comes to the Technology Resource Center can receive a personal approach to software troubleshooting and training with advisement on where to go to pursue further learning on a given subject. Workers at both technology centers are trained to cover a variety of programs and are happy to help.

Although the ITS department strives to support all technology students may come to campus with, we have greater knowledge, authorization and training on the recommended system. FSU is an authorized on-site service provider for the laptops purchased through our program. This means that you don't have to call the vendor, simply bring the unit to the Technology Resource Center for all your support needs.

Just as price is important, so too is the assurance that what you are purchasing will last, through the typical 4-year University experience or beyond. We are confident that the specifications of the recommended laptop will be sufficient to perform well during a student’s standard academic career.
