The Network Access Control system (NAC) at Framingham State University is aimed at ensuring student owned computers meet minimum qualifications to access the campus network. It is a preventative measure against potential threats on the network, such as viruses and spyware, and provides for the safest and most reliable performance of the Framingham State University network. The NAC registration process consists of 3 main steps: download and installation of the NAC Agent, vulnerability assessment and assisted remediation.
- Download and Installation of the NAC Agent
The NAC agent is a small piece of software you must download and install on your computer to help determine if it meets the minimum qualification to access the network. - Vulnerability Assessment
The vulnerability assessment is a process in which the NAC agent looks to determine if you computer meets the minimum qualification for using the network. - Assisted Remediation
If your computer does not meet basic requirements, it will be placed in quarantine and you will be redirected to a page that has the necessary links to update your computer. Once you have completed updating, you can re-assess your computer and gain access to the network.
Security Requirements
Network Access Control validates that student computers have the following services
- NAC Assessment Agent
The NAC Assessment Agent is required to be installed and running on your computer at all times. If it is not, you will not be able to access the Framingham State University network. - Antivirus
Antivirus Software is required to be installed, running and up-to-date on your computer. Symantec Antivirus is the preferred antivirus solution at Framingham State University and it is offered to students free of charge. - Windows Updates
To ensure that client machines are not open to unnecessary threats and attacks Windows machines are required to have proper updates and service packs. Your computer can be set to automatically update itself via Microsoft Windows Updates, so in the future it will always be current.
