July 14, 2010 - Framingham State College to become Framingham State University
July 14, 2010 - On July 28, 2010, Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick signed legislation creating a state university system in the Commonwealth. Six of the nine state colleges will become state universities with the three specialty colleges retaining their names but joining the new state university system. The change of name is the fifth in the long history of Framingham State, which was founded as the nation’s first normal school for women in 1839. The change will become official on October 26, 2010. Before signing the bill, Governor Patrick addressed the hundreds of state university faculty, staff, students, and alumni present, declaring “You have earned this!” Framingham State’s president, Dr. Timothy J. Flanagan, noted, “The university name reflects what the institution has already become in recent years.” The bill signing, which occurred at the Massachusetts State House, was attended by President Flanagan, Chairman of the Board of Trustees Bob Richards, and many members of the Framingham State community, including esteemed alumna Mrs. Kathleen Ryan Roberts, Class of 1936.
