Framingham State University has partnered with Middlesex District Attorney Gerard Leone and other community leaders to establish the Framingham Youth Development Collaborative (FYDC), an initiative aimed at providing services and opportunities to local youth while working to prevent the underlying causes of violence and underemployment.
The FYDC is comprised of persons from law enforcement, the court system, youth and family service agencies, educators, the clergy, municipal agencies, and others. The initiative began following a series of discussions on the need of the community to better assist youth.
The group meets every other month with a goal of working together to support younger children by preventing issues during their formative years from leading to life-altering problems when they become teenagers. The group is focused on early intervention through positive youth resources.
“Young people are our future and it is imperative that we focus on helping them succeed in life by providing as many positive opportunities as we can so that they do not feel compelled to turn to a life of drugs and violence,” Leone said. “I commend Police Chief Steven Carl, FSU President Timothy Flanagan and Reverend Jay Anthony Lloyd for making a commitment to this organization.”
The FYDC is modeled after the Lowell Youth Development Collaborative, which has been successful in helping youth in Lowell, Mass.
Framingham State President Timothy Flanagan said the University is proud to partner with DA Leone’s office and other community leaders on the youth development initiative.
“We are fully invested in this community and can play an important role in helping local youth through our considerable resources,” Flanagan said. “We are committed to doing whatever we can to keep kids on the path to a college education and successful future.” Dr. Susanne H. Conley, the University's Vice President for Enrollment and Student Development, serves as FSU's liaison to the group. She and other members of the collaborative are working to develop a website that will serve as a jobs resource for Framingham teens.
