Individuals, who have completed a high school diploma or G.E.D., interested in enrolling in a course or courses through the Day Division who have not been admitted to Framingham State University (through the Office of Undergraduate Admissions) as a matriculated Day Division student may do so by requesting "Special Student" status.
A "Special Student" is a non-matriculated student. As a non-matriculated student:
- You have the opportunity to enroll in courses on a SPACE AVAILABLE BASIS through the Course Add/Drop process.
- Because you are not in a degree program at Framingham State University, you will not be assigned an advisor.
- You are not eligible for Financial Aid.
- You are required to pay in full as part of the special student application and registration (through the Course Add/Drop process). You are not eligible for any payment program.
- Special Student application and registration is a Day Division procedure. Another registration option is to take courses through the Division of Graduate & Continuing Education (College Center, Room 515).
- Special Student status is limited to two (2) semesters (consecutive or otherwise).
- Students who were suspended from Framingham State University may NOT attend as Special Students unless written approval from the Dean of Undergraduate Education is obtained.
The following directions explain the required forms (All of the forms must be completed to obtain Special Student Status):
- Special Student Application Form (Due in the Student Accounts Office)
- Proof of Residency Form (Due in the Office of the Registrar)
- Course Add/Drop Form (Due in the Office of the Registrar)
If enrolling in 3 courses:
Health Insurance Waiver Form (Due in the Student Accounts Office)
Medical/Immunization History Form (Due in the Office of Health Services)
1. Special Student Application Form:
This form requires biographical information and the number of courses you are interested in taking. The form must be completed by you and signed by the Registrar (or designee) before you go to Student Accounts (located in Dwight Hall, Room 204) to pay for the course(s). This does not necessarily need to be done on the first day of classes but it must be done before you can pay for the course(s) at the Student Accounts Office. Upon receiving payment, the Student Accounts Office will retain the Special Student Application form. On the following business day, a Framingham State University ID# will be created for you and listed on the Special Student Application form. You may request a photocopy of the finalized registration form from the Office of the Registrar for the purpose of obtaining a University ID and a Commuter Parking Sticker.
2. Tuition Residency Form:
This form is for the purpose of determining eligibility for in-state tuition rates. The Tuition Residency Form must be completed and submitted to the Office of the Registrar before paying for the course(s).
3. Course Add/Drop Form:
The first day of classes is also the beginning of the Course Add/Drop period. Course Add/Drop Forms may be obtained from the Office of the Registrar (Dwight Hall, Room 220) on the first day of classes (not before). The Course Add/Drop Form must be filled out by you and signed by the instructor(s) of the course(s) you wish to take. When you are filling out the form, please list your social security number in the box identified as "STUDENT ID#". In the other boxes provided, clearly print your name (Last, First, Middle Initial), print "NON" as the major, and "Fall" & the year or "Spring" & the year for the semester. On the right half of the form marked "PERMISSION TO ADD A COURSE," you will need to print the course number and the course section followed by the course title for the course you are intending to add. Note: All courses have a section letter. If you do not include the section letter, the form will not be accepted by the Office of the Registrar. On the blank line above the words "PROFESSOR’S SIGNATURE" is the area that the course instructor will need to sign if she or he is allowing you into the course.
Look through the Day Division’s current semester's courses being offered. Although you may think that a course is CLOSED, it is up to the discretion of the instructor as to whether there are seats available in the course. Be advised matriculated students are adding and/or dropping courses, which may result in seats becoming available. Again, it is completely up to the instructor of the course as to whether or not you can Add into it.
Also note that most of the courses at Framingham meet for four (4) hours of lectures per week and are scheduled in time blocks. The time blocks at Framingham State University may be different from what you have experienced from other colleges. It would be to your benefit to make use of the blank time block schedule to help map out the course(s) you are hoping to Add.
If the course has prerequisites, it is your responsibility to provide documentation (college transcript(s)) to the instructor of the course. Course prerequisites can be found when viewing the course descriptions on-line as well as in the University catalog. Catalogs are available on-line.
Completed Course Add/Drop Forms must be submitted to the Office of the Registrar before you may be considered as enrolled in the course(s).
Paying for the Course(s):
First, make sure you have the Special Student Application Form signed by the Registrar (or designee), the Proof or Residency Form completed and submitted to the Office of the Registrar, and have obtained the instructor’s signature on the Course Add/Drop Form(s) for the course(s) you wish to take.
Next, you will need to go to the Student Accounts Office located in Dwight Hall, Room 204, to pay for the course(s). They will stamp the blue application form "Paid in Full." The Student Accounts Office will retain the Special Student Application form. You may request a photocopy of the application form, with a University ID# assigned to you from the Office of the Registrar on the following business day.
The above process must take place during the Course Add/Drop period (the first six (6) class days of the semester). For you to be considered enrolled as a "Special Student", all of the paperwork must be received in the Office of the Registrar along with payment submitted to the Student Accounts Office, no later than the last day of the Add/Drop period (See Academic Calendar for exact date). THERE ARE NO EXCEPTIONS!
Please note that if you are enrolling in three (3) courses (full-time status) you will be required to complete:
A. Health Insurance Waiver Form (available online)
B. Medical/Immunization History Form (available in the Office of the Registrar)
See Campus Police (located in the College Center) for information regarding availability of parking stickers. Remember to ask for a map illustrating student designated parking lots. If you park in an unauthorized space, you will likely be ticketed and/or towed.
Photo ID's may be obtained at the ID Office (McCarthy Center). After you have completed the Special Student Registration process and have been assigned a Framingham State University student ID#, you must request a copy of the Special Student Registration form to bring with you to the ID Office.
