From Hooking Up to Viagra: The Sexual Life Cycle

Dr. Pepper

Sociologists think about sex in context: sex is what it is depending on who and what we are at different points of the life cycle. This lecture explores straight and gay sexualities at three different points: when we are unencumbered and not generally ready to make a commitment, when we are in the long-term mating, marriage/commitment dance,  and when we hit middle age (and beyond!). We will also look at social and technological changes of this century that have affected what each of these moments in our life look like--or are likely to look like in the future.

As part of FSU’s linked learning community “The Making of Sexuality,” we are pleased to present a campus-wide, community-focused event on sexuality with nationally acclaimed sex researcher Dr. Pepper Schwartz. Dr. Schwartz, a professor of sociology at the University of Washington is author of numerous books and studies on sexuality, and is widely appreciated for her witty presentations, and her insightful, research-based examinations of puzzles of sexuality. In the past she has been advice columnist for Glamour Magazine, PerfectMatch.com, and is currently AARP’s sex and relationships expert. Along with her talk to the community in Monday, March 5, 2012, Dr. Schwartz will meet with students and faculty during her visit. This event is convened by the Gender Interest Group and sponsored by Academic Affairs, the Departments of English, Consumer Science, History, Sociology, Communication Arts, FSU Wellness Center, Multicultural Affairs, Committee on Diversity and Inclusion, and the FSU History Club.
