Web Sites and Web Space

Web server space on the official College Web server (www.framingham.edu) is available for administrative offices and departments to create official Web pages and for all faculty who wish to create their own personal faculty Web page.  To request Web space on the official College server, please contact the Director of Academic Technology Training and Support.

Faculty "Y" Drives

All faculty receive "Y" drive space on one of the ITS servers. This space will automatically be created and mapped when your network account is created.

To use this space from on campus:

  • Double-click My Computer

  • Double-click the icon <your user name> on 'cs-helpdesk\space\Inetpub\ftproot\faculty' (Y:)

  • Navigate to your folder (based on your network username)

From off campus:

  • In the address field, type http://cs-helpdesk.student.framingham.edu

  • Click the link to browse your home directory. If the logon screen fails to open the first time, click Refresh

  • Enter your user name, placing "campus\ " in front of your user name (for example, campus\jsmith) and enter your network password

  • Navigate to your folder (based on your network username)

Network Access on Campus

Framingham State College offers both wireless and hardwired access to its network. The advantage of wireless is mobility. In comparison, the hardwired connection offers reliability and faster response time. Given the choice between the two, it is suggested that you plug in whenever a hardwired connection is available.

Wireless access to the FSC network and the Internet exists in most areas where laptop computers are commonly used. The best areas to access a strong wireless connections outside of the classroom are the:

  • College Center

  • Juice bar in the Athletic Center

  • Library

  • Patio outside of the Arthur M. Doyle Technology Center

These locations offer a comfortable social atmosphere. If you are outdoors and experience a connection problem, try moving closer to a campus building.

Spam Filtering Software

Spam Filtering Software

All e-mail sent to users of Framingham State College's e-mail system passes through a spam and virus filter. The spam filtering mechanism identifies potential spam so that users can deal appropriately with those messages. Note: No potential spam e-mail is actually blocked from getting through or is deleted from the server.
The virus filtering mechanism scans e-mail for known viruses then intercepts and deletes the virus.  A message will appear stating that the attached virus is deleted.

The College's e-mail system is hosted by "University Information Services" at UMass Amherst. E-mail is scanned by the filtering system at UMass Amherst and then passed to your "inbox". The spam filter examines incoming e-mail and evaluates it based on various rules. When the system finds e-mail that matches spam message patterns, the subject line is modified to include [PMX] followed by one or more # signs indicating to what extent the message is likely to qualify as spam.

Note: The spam filter does not delete spam e-mail; it just identifies it as potential spam.

Since the spam filter does not delete spam e-mail, it is up to you to decide what you would like to do with it. The most logical choice would be to filter the spam into a folder that can be reviewed for false positives, however doing nothing or simply deleting it is also an option. MS-Outlook can be configured to automatically route flagged messages to a trash folder (or some other folder) if desired.

Directions on how to set up a mail filter using Microsoft Outlook can be found at http://its.frc.mass.edu/itn/ffaq.htm.

Note:

* If using IMAP with Outlook Express, it will not be possible to create a filter. Outlook Express is hard coded to monitor the POP3 inbox only. * A filter cannot be created for the Web mail service (iPlanet) but the identifying stamp will be visible.
* Filtering to an IMAP folder will contribute toward the user's storage space limitations (50MB).
* If a spam e-mail is received by an IMAP user while they are using Web mail (iPlanet), the next time they access Outlook, the message will not get filtered because it is already in the Inbox. Outlook appears to filter mail on arrival; it does not seem to automatically scan current objects within the Inbox. However, users can manually launch the filter on the current contents of the Inbox from the menu (Tools -> Rules Wizard -> Run Now).
* If you prefer that your e-mail never be filtered and tagged for spam, please contact the Faculty/Staff Helpdesk in order to be added to the "opt-out" list. Users on this list will have their e-mail passed on to them without evaluation.
* If mail is flagged as spam that shouldn't be, please contact the Faculty/Staff Helpdesk.
