Wireless Laptop
Program
The
intent of Framingham State College's laptop program is to provide
technology-rich tools and resources into the classroom through which
instructors can expand and deepen the learning experiences of their
students. The wireless technology expands the access for students
and instructors to web-based and network-based resources through the use of laptops equipped with wireless
LAN cards communicating with wireless access units, which are located across campus in the academic
buildings, the Center for Academic Support and Advising,
the Library, the College Center and the Residence Halls. The project started in the
fall of 1998 with four classes participating. About 80 students
were distributed laptops to use in their classes for the semester while
the professors incorporated the use of the laptops and technology into
their curriculums.
To date, over 270 individual class sections have been involved in the program, with approximately
4000 students having access to a wireless laptop. In the fall of 2002, the College
inaugurated a program that will lead to
all undergraduate students having wireless laptops by the fall of 2005
by requiring all incoming new students to the College (freshmen and
transfer) to have their own laptop.
