What is a Scholarly Journal?

Scholarly journals are very often used for research purposes. Juried, refereed, or peer reviewed scholarly journals are evaluated by peers (editorial board) in the field in which the author writes. Non-scholarly journals are popular magazinessuch as Time, Newsweek, Business Week (glossy, commercial, non-technical)or Trade journals such as Advertising Age, Computer World (glossy, provide information and advertising on a particular industry). These are the characteristics of a scholarly journal.

PUBLISHER
        Professional society or organization.

AUDIENCE
        Limited audience. Scholars and researchers. 

LANGUAGE
        Technical or specialized.

PURPOSE
        Reports original research in specific field.

APPEARANCE
        Plain rather than glossy paper. Illustrations are in the form of charts, graphs, or diagrams. 

AUTHORS
        Scholars in the field

GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS OF ARTICLES
        Contain bibliography and/or footnotes.
        Article title usually reflects its content.
        Abstract available usually at the beginning of the article.
        Most articles contain at least two of the following sections:
                Introduction to literature review;
                Theory of background;
                Subjects;
                Methods;
                Results;
                Discussion;
