I teach all levels of apparel design from basic construction to advanced pattern making and computer application. As an educator and fashion designer my primary responsibility is to stay at the forefront of apparel industry methods of creative and technical apparel design. In my teaching I emphasize what the industry is doing now with computer applications and technical design processes. In my own work I emphasize creative use of materials and garment embellishment.
My courses provide both theory and practical learning experience to prepare graduates for a wide variety of careers in the fashion industry. The apparel industry is big business and New England is home to many corporate headquarters including Reebok, TJX, J. Jill, Hasbro, and the Army, Navy and Coast Guard Soldier Systems Commands. I have built a strong relationship with a large number of companies that has proved effective by virtue of: creating our Industry Advisory Board, placing many graduates and interns as technical designers with these companies, and working with representatives of these companies to learn and incorporate the newest industry techniques in my courses including the recent adoption of Adobe Illustrator software for use in designing apparel.
I design, exhibit, and published my own work and my students and I have been honored with many awards from professional associations for our design work. My original designs are consistently chosen by international juries for exhibition in the prestigious annual International Textile and Apparel Association Designer Shows, and my most recent Thai silk design received the 3rd place award in Thailand’s Queen Sirikit Institute of Sericulture competition.
