The word "geometry" brings many things to mind:  you may think of the Pythagorean Theorem, points, lines, and shapes, and various surfaces, phrases such as side-angle-side and alternate interior angles, angle types such as acute angles, obtuse angles, complementary angles, and supplementary angles, or you may wonder

  • how "higher geometry" is different from "Euclidean geometry" or, reading the course description,

  • what an "axiomatic system" is, or .... .

Having questions is very important and inquiry is a useful tool for exploring and learning new ideas and methods.  To that end, I have some initial questions for you.

  • What is geometry?  What is a geometry?

  • What types of geometry are there?

  • What is meant by plane geometry, solid geometry, coordinate geometry, high-dimensional geometry, geometric transformation, and tiling?

One last question, for now, who uses geometry???

  • Syllabus:  Please carefully read the course syllabus.  This document provides information about the course, the required textbook, the exams and assignments, the grading policy, attendance and participation, and the make up policy (there are no make up exams and no make up assignments).

  • Readings, Handouts, and Resources:  The only way in which to learn the material is to do the readings, studying the theory and methods, and applying what we discuss by working on various practice exercises and by exploring and doing proofs.  The readings, course handouts, and resources to help you to explore and learn Euclidean Geometry will be posted on the Readings, Handouts, and Resources page.  You should check this page on a daily basis so that you can access information and resources as they are posted.  Once a section of the text or a hyperlink to an online reading is posted, you are expected to read the section and access the posted source as well as to begin working on the associated exercises. 

  • Course Calendar:  For your convenience, the important dates from the Framingham State University Academic Calendar, the dates of the three (3) examinations and the final examination, and the important dates related to the multi-part assignments have been included in the course calendar.

Exams:  There will be three (3) examinations and one (1) cumulative final examination .  The dates for these examinations are listed below.  Depending on the problem types, the formats for these exams may be different.  You are expected to be on-time for the examinations; you will not be given additional time during which to complete an examination if you are late.

  • Exam I:  Friday, October 17, 2014
  • Exam II:  Friday, November 14, 2014
  • Exam III:  Wednesday, December 10, 2014
  • Final Exam:  Wednesday, December 17, 2014, 8 AM - 11 AM
