Here are some frequently asked questions for MATH 117 Introduction to Statistics.  Answers to other questions may be added during the semester.  If you have a question, please feel free to email me.  Please remember that your questions are important to me, that I want to help you to do well in the course, and that there is no such thing as a stupid question.

  • Am I prepared to take MATH 117 Introduction to Statistics?  As stated in the placement testing section of the DGCE Student Resources and Information page, "In order to ensure that students enroll in courses that match their individual skill and preparation levels, the Massachusetts Board of Higher Education has mandated that all new undergraduate students take placement tests in reading, writing and mathematics." Please visit Placement Testing page of the First-Year Programs section of the Framingham State University web site if you would like more information about placement testing in mathematics. If you have any questions about placement testing, please call 508-626-4905 or e-mail placement@framingham.edu. Even if you are not an undergraduate, it is recommended that you take the placement exam in mathematics since you must have sufficient proficiency in mathematics in order to succeed in this course. This course will not include remedial study of functions, equations, graphing, calculation/arithmetic, or order of operations for use of a calculator or software: you are expected to have these skills.

    • Matriculated students who have a placement exam code of 2, 3, 4, or 5 on the Math Accuplacer,  those who earned a grade of C- or higher in MATH 095 General Mathematics, or those who have passed an approved transfer mathematics course are eligible to take this course.  In general, you will need to be comfortable working with your calculator and have some knowledge of arithmetic (including fractions), functions, and graphing.

In addition to visiting the Placement Testing page of the First-Year Programs section of the Framingham State University web site, you may call 508-626-4905 or e-mail placement@framingham.edu if you have questions about placement testing.

  • Who should take MATH 117 Introduction to Statistics?  Those who are required to take a basic statistics course should take this course.   MATH 117 Introduction to Statistics is a required course or a related required course for several majors at Framingham State University.  Examples of departments whose majors require or recommend MATH 117 Introduction to Statistics include Government, Mathematics, Psychology, and Sociology.  Those whose major is in Biology should not take MATH 117 Introduction to Statistics since they are required to take MATH 208 Biostatistics.  If your major is in, for example,  Art, Communication Arts, and English may be better served by your taking MATH 119 Mathematics for the Liberal Arts.  I would be glad help you to discuss these courses with you to help you to choose the course would best-fit your career interests and personal goals.

    • You should work through the Student Tutorial (directly accessible from the Course Menu) in order to familiarize yourself with Blackboard.  If you have used Blackboard for another course, you should still explore the Student Tutorial to check for any additions and changes to the system.

    • You can access the Blackboard User Manual on the Tools/Communication page (directly accessible from the Course Menu).  The Blackboard User Manual lists topics as well as allows you to search for specific topics.

  • Why may I not receive an immediate email message in response to an inquiry on Blackboard or to an email message that I send?

    • In regard to Blackboard questions, the Student Tutorial (directly accessible from the Course Menu) provides information about using Blackboard as does the Blackboard User Manual on the Tools/Communication page (directly accessible from the Course Menu).  These facilities have been made available to you so that you will have direct access to important Blackboard information.  It is very important that you carefully check out the Blackboard course pages so that you will know how to access the available information and so that you will know what resources/facilities are available to you; you may find it helpful to print the pages so that you will know on what page you can access particular resources/facilities.  An email will be sent if the necessary information is not already easily accessible on Blackboard.

    • Please remember to use the various discussion forums correctly.  The Open Question Forum, the Ask the Instructor a Question, and the Give me a Hint forums are for questions about course material only.  These forums are not for day-to-day course questions or for Blackboard questions.  If you need Blackboard help then you should make sure that you have used the Student Tutorial and the Blackboard User Manual first.  If you cannot access the information that you need on either of these then you may post your question on the Blackboard Technical Questions forum.  Everyone is welcome to answer questions posted on this forum.  If you are experiencing major Blackboard difficulties then you should access the Blackboard Learn 24/7 Support or call 1-866-361-8970 toll free.

    • It is important to mention that taking an online course does not mean that your instructor is available to you 24/7 (twenty-four hours each day for the seven days of the week).  In addition, I would like the class to work together in addressing questions that arise throughout the course.  It is my hope that by having all members of the class working together to ask and to answer questions that our online discussions may be richer and more enjoyable.  If we do things together then, hopefully, everyone will learn more and we may be able to truly achieve discussion of the course material.
