I was selected as a U.S. Fulbright Scholar for the academic year 2016-2017. I went to China to teach graduate level courses in library and in information science at Zhejiang University, one of the top five universities in that nation. I taught Research and Evaluation and Frameworks for Information Literacy Seminar to graduate students in the Information Resources Management Department, School of Public Administration of Zhejiang University (ZJU) in Hangzhou, China.

One of the most memorable and rewarding experiences during my Fulbright in China was lecturing on my research throughout the country. In addition to teaching my graduate and Ph.D. students at ZJU, my host university, I was also invited to and lectured at six other prominent universities. One of the lectures was held at Beijing Institute of Technology during the morning of Thanksgiving Day. Participants were academic librarians, library administrators, and faculty from 11 universities in Beijing. Thinking about our American holiday in the U.S., I felt a little homesick on that day. After the lecture, my hosts recognized that I was lecturing on a very important family day and that night at dinner they apologized that they could not get a turkey, but they served Beijing duck instead.

Hangzhou city hosts the most publicly shared bike riders in China. The city is rather flat and is becoming well-known after the G20 Summit at the beginning of the fall semester. I have never seen so many bicycles in one place in my life. The city has well marked bike routes throughout the city and it’s easy to hop on the public red rental bike in the city, or a yellow bike on campus. Just below the ZJU main library building, there is a mammoth bike parking lot. Students ride bikes, e-bikes, or scooters to get around on and off campus. I can ride my bike in the school building corridors all the way to my faculty office. I park my bike in my office and walk to my classroom. Riding a bike in the building is fun. You must try it to believe.
