Come hear Clint Smith -- 2x TED speaker, nationally recognized poet, co-host of the award winning podcasts “Justice in America” and “Pod Save the People,” creative writing teacher for inmates in Massachusetts prisons, and current PhD candidate in Education at Harvard University.

Mixing live poetry read from his new collection Counting Descent with a talk titled “History Reconsidered,” Clint Smith calls on all of us to confront the complex truths of America’s history of racism past and present. As one of his TED talks warns, it is dangerous to be silent and not speak your truth. Let’s come together as a campus to welcome, Clint Smith!

Weight Stigma in American Society: Public Health Consequences and Structural Solutions

Weight-based bullying, stigma, and discrimination are commonplace in our society. What impact does this have on children and adults, and what should we do about it? Dr. Rebecca Puhl will present research evidence highlighting the nature and health consequences of weight stigma, and discuss broad-level strategies to address this problem, including actions from parents, educators, health care providers, and policy-makers.

The need for food is something that all living things have in common. Feeding relationships between species are the foundation of the global food web that has sustained life on Earth for millions of years.

Unlike most other species, humans in the modern world have choices about we eat, and our choices can serve to break these delicate links, or strengthen and sustain them. Habitat Earth will take you on journey through some of Earth's diverse and complex ecosystems, from the deepest oceans to the forest floor. This visually stunning fulldome film will leave you with a deeper appreciation of the life forms that populate these ecosystems, and the dynamic relationships between them.

Following the film, Dr. Megan Lehnerd, Assistant Professor of Food and Nutrition at Framingham State University, will share her thoughts about will share her thoughts about how to eat with the planet in mind.

The Independent Association of Framingham State Alumni (IAFSA) located at 42 Adams Road, Framingham is hosting a series of Coffee and Conversations. The series will continue February 18th with Suzanne Higham, discussing her work as a landscape designer and her contributions to the Garden on the Hill. Register Here

Suzanne Higham is the owner/designer of Frog Hollow Landscapes. She is an award-winning landscape designer with more than 14 years of professional experience in the design, installation, and maintenance of residential and commercial landscapes. She created the plan for Garden on the Hill a project of the Class of 1964, transforming the side yard of Alumni House into a garden for remembrance and reflection. Attendees are encouraged to engage in conversations after her presentation.

Coffee/tea and refreshments will be provided.

Family Workshop

Paper Gardens
Saturday February 29 from 1-3 pm $25 per family

Inspired by the colorful ceramic sculptures by Mary Morazzi Henderson on display in the Danforth Art Museum, create your own “garden” of flowers! We will have lots of colorful papers and other fun supplies and we will show you some simple tricks to make paper flowers which will pop and burst with color on your own landscape. No experience required!

Bring the whole family or just a friend to this fun workshop. Limited to 30 participants. $25 includes up to 4 family members; additional members welcome for $5 each.

Kids’ Night Out

Back by popular demand! Choose one option or all three!

Parents, take advantage of a chance to go shopping or get a bite to eat without the kids! This is a night just for the children with us at the Danforth. We provide a fun art-making activity, a scavenger hunt, Pictionary and pizza & lemonade. Limited to 25 participants, Grades K-8.

Giant Initial Pictures
Friday, March 6, 6-9pm $25 per child

Inspired by the works on display in the museum by Jo Sandman, we will create fun effects with watercolors on paper, then cut and rip them up into HUGE letters to create our initials in a framed picture.

Crazy Collage
Friday, April 3, 6-9pm $25 per child

Have fun cutting out pictures of people in fun places and draw your own crazy scene to place them in! We will visit the photographs by Liz Albert in the museum for inspiration.

Sock Sculptures
Friday, May 1, 6-9pm $25 per child

Inspired by the fun sculptures by Lisa Barthelson in the museum, we will create our own designs using stockings, socks wire and other stuff!
