This event raises awareness about the tragedies that took place in Artsakh and Azerbaijan. In September 2020, Azerbaijan broke its ceasefire with Armenia over the disputed territory, Artsakh/Nagorno-Karabakh's. In this event, the panelists will discuss the geopolitical issues in the caucus regions, PR and social media influences, the Armenian diaspora experiences (current trauma), and human rights issues. They will address the following questions: Why is this happening now? How are the diaspora communities coping with this tragedy? And where do we go from here?

The Panelists:
• Rich Elmoyan, Geopolitical analyst, San Francisco State University.
• Fred Tatlayn, B.S. in Biopsychology from University of California, Davis.
• Natalie Kazarian, M.A. in Clinical Psychology, Pepperdine University.
• Dr. Henry Theriault, Professor and Chair of the Philosophy Department at Worcester State University

Sponsored by the Department of Political Science and the Global Studies program as part of the Global Studies Lecture Series.

Two Pioneers of Change in Culinary History

By Soren Colstrup, publications intern

Lena Richard and Julia Child were able to overcome barriers of gender and racial inequality while teaching folks to cook professionally within the style of Creole and French Cuisine.

The two women were featured in collaboration with the Smithsonian American Women’s History Initiative for Women’s History Month, on Wednesday, March 10.

Lena Richard, was born in rural Louisiana and as a young girl she worked alongside her mother for an elite white family.

Dr. Ashley Rose Young, a historian at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History explained, “Her career later deviated away from domestic service to professional catering after attending cooking school in Boston. From there she built a small culinary empire in New Orleans, shaping public understanding of New Orleans cuisine.”

“She showcased and celebrated the Black roots of Creole cooking. Throughout her career she owned and operated catering businesses, eateries, a fine dining restaurant, a cooking school and an international frozen food business in the racially segregated south,” said Young.

Richard published her first cook book in 1939 and was the first black chef to author a work on Creole Cuisine. She was also one of the first black chefs in the country to have her own self-titled TV program.

“There are unfortunately no known recordings of Lena Richard’s television show. Her copper chafing dish is one of the few materials preserved which help understand aspects of her life, but do not offer her perspective or opinion,” said Young.

Paula Johnson, Curator of National Museum of American History explained, “The pursuit of evidence for Leana Richard, is so much harder than for Julia Child.”

“Unlike Richard, Child left a plethora of material that is widely known and archived. She was also a very social person and had many friends and colleagues. Her viewers thought that they knew her,” added Johnson.

Julia Child strangely did not develop an interest in cooking until she met her husband Paul Child, who introduced her to French cuisine while the two were members of the OSS.

From there she would go on to become the first woman to have her own cooking show.
Richard faced a different source of adversity through her efforts than that of Child, because of her race, according to Johnson.

“Richard had to secure a written permission from all of her white classmates before she could be admitted into the course. She had to take her lunch in a separate room while receiving praise from her classmates for her culinary expertise,” Johnson said.

Despite the variety of challenges these women faced, they were both a groundbreaking force in the culinary industry.
