Rachel Trousdale’s new book, Humor, Empathy, and Community in Twentieth-Century American Poetry, argues that poets like T. S. Eliot, Marianne Moore, and Cathy Park Hong use humor to examine how well people can understand each other across difference. Dr. Sy Stokes will deliver the 2022 Voices of Color keynote address, titled "Freedom of Speech and the Politics of Morality: Campus Racial Climate in the Modern Era."

Dr. Stokes is a postdoctoral fellow for the National Center for Institutional Diversity at the University of Michigan who gained national acclaim for his spoken word performances of "The Black Bruins" and "Dear White Counselor" -- look them up on YouTube!

His research interrogates the historical development of racial capitalism, nationalism, white supremacy, and racism; and examines the ways that college students respond to campus racism and issues in the broader sociopolitical environment through activism and political engagement.

Dr. Stokes is also the recipient of the 2021 USC Rossier School of Education Ph.D. Dissertation of the Year Award for his dissertation, Into the Wildfire: Campus Racial Climate and the Trump Presidency.

Mazmanian Gallery puts FSU students’ creativity on display

By Branden LaCroix, publications intern

A ceramic hand holding shredded photo negatives, a city scape painted in vibrant primary colors, a collection of syringes and burnt spoons erupting in an arc of extravagant multi-colored children’s toys – these were just a few of the pieces on display at FSU’s Mazmanian Gallery for the annual Juried Student Exhibition held on Feb. 15.

Jenna Billian, a senior studio art major, said this is her second time entering the exhibition. Her piece this year was an enormous, bright-pink board fitted with dozens of small shelves, each holding a different item – an old toy, a plastic, pink hand mirror, a bag of candy, assorted bottles of makeup, among others.

She said she had no idea what to submit, until “one day, I just had this vision of this pink wall with these tiny, tiny shelves.

“I just like to collect things and things that I think are pretty and fun,” Billian said. “And so, this particular collection was me trying to figure out a way to display all of the things that I had selected.”

The student exhibition is held every year with an outside judge brought in to view the entrants “so that it can be impartial,” according to Ellie Krakow, assistant professor of art and the director of the Mazmanian Gallery.

This year’s guest judge was Lynne Cooney, director of exhibitions and galleries at Montserrat College of Art.

Krakow presented the winners based on Cooney’s decisions.

Third place was awarded to Danielle Ray for her “Untitled” sculpture, second was awarded to Dillon Handy for his piece “Macro Golf Pencil,” and first place was awarded to Diana Azen for her illustration “Melt Man.”

A fourth prize was awarded to graduate student Indigo Fox Tree-McGrath for her piece “Ignominious Collection of the Overwhelmed.” The prize was given as an addition to Arts & Ideas current-year theme of “Good Trouble.”

Krakow said Cooney was “very impressed with the honesty, ambition, and political strength of the piece.”

McGrath, an art education graduate student, said her piece is “all about trauma.”

“Ignominious Collection of the Overwhelmed” is a towering collection of charred and partly melted Barbie dolls that belonged to Tree-McGrath’s mother. The dolls were damaged in the fire that burned down their house when Tree-McGrath was 16.

“I don’t think a lot of my artwork is actually about trauma,” she explained. “And so, I think it was a really vulnerable piece for me as an artist. So, I think it’s nice it was perceived so powerfully.”
