“Stories remain in our hearts”: Arts & Ideas screens The Breadwinner

By Branden LaCroix, publications intern

Sitting in the bustling marketplace of Kabul, Afghanistan, a man tells his young daughter, Parvana, about the power of storytelling. “Stories remain in our hearts even when all else is gone. Our people have always told stories from our very beginning,” he says.

Later, armed men from the Taliban break down the door of his family’s home. He is arrested for the transgression of teaching his daughters to read.

At this time, girls are forbidden from education, from being outside without a male relative or husband accompanying them, from showing their faces without a veil, and from working and earning money.

Desperate to help her family, Parvana disguises herself as a boy to find work and save her father.
This is the story of the 2017 animated film The Breadwinner. Arts & Ideas held a screening of the film in the McCarthy Center Forum on April 11.

The film is based on the novel by Deborah Ellis and takes place in 2001 shortly before the U.S. invasion and the removal of the Taliban from power.

English Professor Claudia Springer hosted a discussion of the film and provided context for Afghanistan’s history – the so-called “graveyard of empires” – and the events currently taking place there.  She said the film screening is part of Arts & Ideas’ Good Trouble events because Parvana “makes good trouble.”

She said the film is more relevant now than at its initial release given the withdrawal of U.S. forces from Afghanistan on Aug. 30, 2021, and the Taliban’s subsequent return to power.
She explained the Taliban is currently facing an internal struggle between “hardliners” who want a return to its former oppressive rule and those who are “advocating for a less-severe form of government.

“It’s still unclear what form this new government is going to take and whether they will be as restrictive as they were 25 years ago,” she said.

Despite the negative perception of Afghanistan, and the Middle East as a whole, from the West, Springer said the film helps show the humanity of its people through storytelling.

“Making this film is to undo that demonization of Afghanistan and Islam and to show others so many different kinds of people – people just like us, people struggling, and people trying to maintain their families and their friendships,” she said.

“It is an effort to show Afghanistan as a real place that we can relate to.”
