Athletic Training: A Growing Profession

By Soren Colstrup, publications intern

Many people assume that athletic trainers are the same thing as a strength and conditioning coach, said Adam Hernandez, Director of Athletics Training Services at Phillips Exeter Academy,
“They have a similar background, but they are not the same thing. The kind of work we do includes prevention, emergency care, clinical examination and diagnosis, therapeutic intervention and rehab.”

Hernandez’s lecture, part of FSU’s Careers in Nutrition and Wellness Speaker Series, gave students and staff at FSU a glance at the unique everyday role that an athletic trainer plays in keeping people healthy and nimble, in a variety of settings.

According to Hernandez, athletic trainers treat a variety of emergency illnesses and injuries, including concussions, heat stroke, asthma, diabetic emergencies, sudden cardiac death and spine injuries.

“I always tell my students that I like working with them, but I hope I never see them because that means that they are injured,” Hernandez added.

In 2015, the athletic training community adopted what is now commonly known as a 3:2 model, which includes 3 years of undergraduate study in kinesiology or sports science, and then a 2-year program for obtaining a Masters in athletic training.

Hernandez explained, “To become an athletic trainer, you must apply to a CAATE (Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education) accredited school. You will then graduate from the program and then you will sit for your National Board Certification. Once you pass that, you become a duly-certified athletic trainer and then you just have to obtain a license in your specific state.”

“Athletic training is also in high demand. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there is a growth of about 21 percent in the year 2021,” Hernandez added.

There are a number of different settings that athletic trainers commonly practice in, ranging from athletic teams to basic training units, according to Hernandez.

“The collegiate setting is a big place were athletic training first started. I have had the opportunity to work with a few [colleges] and the closest one to FSU would be Boston College, where I worked with their football team,” said Hernandez.

Professional and Olympic sports are also popular settings where athletic trainers can be seen, according to Hernandez.

“I’ve had an opportunity to do that as well, while working with the LA Kings down in California. One of the coolest experiences I have had as a trainer was working with the US Men’s Luge team in 2018,” Hernandez added.

Woman at War (2018) is an Icelandic gem. No one suspects that Halla, a mild-mannered choir-leader, is the eco-terrorist battling corporate greed and government lies. Fueled by her fierce convictions, Halla displays extraordinary ingenuity as a solo crusader for the environment. This is cinematic artistry at its best!

The author Zaki graduated from Framingham High School and now is a Professor of Psychology at Stanford University. He is the Director of the Social Neuroscience Laboratory. The book is about – “Empathy is in short supply. Isolation and tribalism are rampant. We struggle to understand people who aren’t like us, but find it easy to hate them. Studies show that we are less caring than we were even thirty years ago. In 2006, Barack Obama said that the United States is suffering from an “empathy deficit.” Since then, things only seem to have gotten worse.

It doesn’t have to be this way. In this groundbreaking book, Jamil Zaki shares cutting-edge research, including experiments from his own lab, showing that empathy is not a fixed trait—something we’re born with or not—but rather a skill that can be strengthened through effort. He also tells the stories of people who embody this new perspective, fighting for kindness in the most difficult of circumstances. We meet a former neo-Nazi who is now helping extract people from hate groups, ex-prisoners discussing novels with the judge who sentenced them, Washington police officers changing their culture to decrease violence among their ranks, and NICU nurses fine-tuning their empathy so that they don’t succumb to burnout.

Thursday, 4/8
• Book Discussion on How to be an Antiracist @ 2:00 through Zoom. Contact Samantha Westall (swestall@framingham.edu) for details.

Student Recognition Opportunity

If your area/department will be honoring students for their achievements, Campus Engagement is pleased to announce a special opportunity to support you.

More than ever we need to pause and acknowledge that our students have navigated a very challenging academic year – especially students who are graduating, accomplished academic honors, received awards … and much more.

On May 7 during the annual Sandbox program, we will be hosting a booth designated for Unprecedented Achievements. We will work with you to coordinate the pick-up of certificates, cords, etc. and/or provide a photo spot for student recognition. Our goal is to create a low maintenance way to celebrate and give our students a moment in the spotlight. The photos from the booth will (hopefully) be used for a special celebratory video shared at the end of the academic year. All you need to do is provide us with information – you do not need to be present at the booth.

Interested? Please complete this form to get on our list for more information and how to participate. Submissions DUE Friday, April 23.

(We are in the preliminary stages and ask for your patience while the actual Sandbox event details get COVID safety details ironed out.) Thank you!
