Hundreds of people flocked to Bowditch Field on May 2nd for the 4th Annual Special Olympics MetroWest School Day Games hosted by Framingham State University.

The games are a collaboration between Special Olympics Massachusetts (SOMA), the Framingham State Athletic Department and the University’s Student Involvement and Leadership Development (SILD) Office. Nearly 150 students from FSU volunteer at the event.

Special Olympics Massachusetts provides year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of well-coached Olympic-type sports for individuals with intellectual disabilities. More than 240 athletes came from communities throughout the MetroWest area. They competed in several different events, including wheelchair racing, assisted walking; 50-meter, 100-meter and 200-meter dashes; 4x100 relay, shot put and long jump.

For the second year in a row the Framingham Parks & Recreation Department generously provided Bowditch Field in Framingham for the Games. The event includes a special Opening Ceremony, which featured the Framingham Police Department Color Guard. Athletes were awarded for their accomplishments in a ceremonial awards presentation at the end of each event.
