Peace Corps Volunteer

Priscilla Portugal-Moreno

Priscilla Portugal-Moreno is serving as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Botswana. She is located in a rural farming village in southern Botswana, where she works at a primary school helping students with English literacy and life skills. Life skills describe the knowledge, attitudes, and skills adolescents need in order to make healthy decisions that lead to a successful transition into adulthood. Life skills supports youth in building their capacity for communication, decision-making, managing emotions, assertiveness, leadership skills, self-esteem building, resisting peer pressure, and relationship skills. It also addresses important related issues of gender, gender-based violence, and human rights. Priscilla also volunteers at the local clinic, helping with the Child Welfare Clinic by assisting a nurse with home visits and helping teach new parents about their children’s nutritional needs. Peace Corps Botswana is here to help Botswana reach the 90/90/90 goal when it comes to HIV/AIDS. The 90/90/90 goal is that 90% of population knows their HIV status, and of that 90% who know their status, 90% of the people who are HIV-positive are on ARVs, and of the 90% who are on ARVs, the virus is no longer transmittable. Volunteers in Botswana work in schools, clinics/hospitals, and Non-Government Organizations to help reach this goal with hopes to eradicate HIV/AIDS from the country.
