Requirements for First-Year Applicants

We consider many factors when making an admission decision. Take a look at our requirements so that you know what we expect from our applicants.

Coursework & Grades

We evaluate the strength of your academic performance throughout your four years of high school. We also consider coursework in progress, so it’s important to continue to work hard your senior year. We want to see you challenge yourself, provided you can still be successful and maintain consistent academic achievement.

You’re expected to complete the following 17 courses at the college preparatory level in each academic subject at a minimum. Each course is equivalent to one year-long class.

English: 4 courses
Math: 4 courses (Algebra I & II and Geometry or Trigonometry, or comparable coursework) including mathematics during the final year of high school
Sciences: 3 courses (from Natural Science and/or Physical Science and/or Technology/Engineering), including 3 courses with laboratory work
Social Sciences: 2 courses (including 1 course in U.S. History)
Foreign Languages: 2 courses (in a single language)
Electives: 2 courses (from the above subjects or from the Arts & Humanities or Computer Sciences)

In addition, we calculate your Grade Point Average (GPA) on a 4.0 scale using your academic courses completed at the college preparatory level. Grades earned in honors, advanced placement, and dual enrollment courses are given extra weight. We do not include non-academic courses such as physical education or health.

The minimum GPA required is a 3.0, which is roughly a “B” average. If your GPA does not meet the minimum GPA requirement, we use the following sliding scale which is based on your GPA, and test scores (if provided). SAT is Evidence Based Reading & Writing, and Mathematics; ACT is Composite score.

GPASATACT
2.51 - 2.9999019
2.41 - 2.50103020
2.31 - 2.40107021
2.21 - 2.30111022
2.11 - 2.20114023

Admission is determined in accordance with the Massachusetts Department of Higher Education’s Undergraduate Admissions Standards for the Massachusetts State University System and the University of Massachusetts. Meeting the minimum standards does not guarantee admission. Learn more about the DHE’s admissions standards.

Standardized Testing Policy

FSU is test-optional, meaning you're not required to submit SAT or ACT scores to be considered for admission.

If you earn admission and choose to enroll, you may be asked to submit SAT or ACT scores (if available) for research purposes on retention, persistence, and future admission selection standards.

Extracurriculars and Achievements

In addition to strong academics, we’re looking for students who will contribute to our campus. Take advantage of the opportunity to share your activities and accomplishments inside and outside the classroom. We want to learn more about your strengths and skills, and what you’re passionate about.

Essay & Letters of Recommendation (optional)

You’re not required to submit an essay or letters of recommendation. If you choose to submit these items, they can help us better understand your story and interest in attending FSU. This is your opportunity to explain any unique circumstances or demonstrate qualities and skills that will help you succeed.

Gap Year Explanation (if applicable)

If you took time off after high school graduation to work, travel, or focus on your personal well-being, you’ll need to provide a description of activities that accounts for all time spent out of school. There is space on the application for this information. If you completed college courses after high school graduation (even just one course), you’re considered a transfer and should review the requirements for transfer applicants.
