Kristin Powers
Kristin Beth Powers is a sculptural installation artist with a focus on creating immersive spaces that allow for introspection. Working with multiple mediums, lens-based media, and sound, Powers explores an ever-evolving iterative landscape, looking for resonant frequencies where many feel. Powers holds a BFA in Ceramics from Rhode Island School of Design, and an MFA in Sculpture from Massachusetts College of Art and Design. Her recent curatorial projects include Elemental, What Do We Have To Say?, and The Art of Storytelling. Powers' work has been exhibited recently at First Street Gallery NYC, Remarque Santa Fe, MassArt x SoWa Boston, MERZ Gallery Scotland, and SAGE Gallery WY, and has work in the collections of the New Museum of Arts and Design in NYC and the Currier Museum of Art in NH. Powers has participated in residencies at MERZ - Scotland, Vermont Studio Center, Haystack, and Penland. As a visiting lecturer, Powers shares insights on Acoustic Ecology, Installation Art, Ceramics, and Experiential Arts. She has contributed as a visiting artist at institutions such as Wheaton College, Rhode Island School of Design, University of Colorado-Boulder, Waldorf High Schools internationally, and the Boston Design Center. Powers recently played a pivotal role in formulating locally mined clay from former brickfields, establishing the groundwork for a new ceramic residency in the Dumfries/Galloway area of Southwestern Scotland. In 1990, Powers co-founded Trikeenan Tileworks, a U.S. manufacturer of handcrafted architectural ceramics, achieving substantial growth and earning accolades for design and manufacturing. She served as CEO, CFO, and Designer until mid-2011. In 2012, Powers assumed a leadership role in developing and directing the arts program at an innovative Waldorf high school, later becoming its Chair. Her mentorship under a distinguished Waldorf arts and aesthetics professor equipped her with expertise in experiential arts and aesthetics teaching for college and high school environments. In 2016, Powers extended her impact to Asia, teaching and assisting in art program development in China, as well as volunteering in schools and orphanages in Nepal and India. Currently based in Boston, Powers serves as Adjunct and CE faculty at RISD, Massachusetts College of Art and Design, and Framingham State University, and teaches experiential art for an international Buddhist/Steinerian teacher-training college based in Nepal. Born in Chicago and raised in England and Canada, Powers is actively engaged in curating MassArt’s extensive art collection.
