Math Placement Test

The initial assessment measure is the Accuplacer Elementary Algebra Test.

Math Placement testing is required of all entering matriculated students unless they have:

  • Taken the ACCUPLACER test at another institution.
  • Transfer credits have been awarded in math.

Please note, ACCUPLACER Math Placement testing is required of all STEM majors (those majoring in Biology, Chemistry and Food Science, Computer Science, Food and Nutrition, Mathematics, Nursing, or Physics and Earth Science) who are not transferring in a math course in the Algebra/Calculus sequence.

Students who are not STEM majors do not have to take the math placement test if transfer credits in math have been awarded.

Students who do not receive a satisfactory score will be required to take part in the Math Lab Emporium that is attached to the major required/suggested credit-bearing math course. A satisfactory score will exempt the student from the Math Lab Emporium.

If your score on this test is satisfactory, you will be able to take any 100 level mathematics course. If you do very well on the Elementary Algebra Test, you will also take the College Level Mathematics test, which will determine whether or not you can proceed to a 200 level course, such as pre-calculus or calculus.

All students are allowed one retake of the math test.

Students should review the fundamentals of algebra covered in high school courses prior to taking the Accuplacer Mathematics test.

Topics on the Elementary Algebra Test:

  • Arithmetic of real numbers (including integers, rational numbers, irrational numbers)
  • Simplifying algebraic expressions
  • Evaluating algebraic expressions
  • Absolute value
  • Simplifying rational expressions
  • Definition of integer exponents and operations involving expressions
  • containing exponents
  • Solving linear equations
  • Solving equations involving fractions
