What happens at orientation?

Orientation is a one-day experience in which you will:

  • Meet faculty advisors from your academic department.

  • Register for classes.
  • Have your student ID picture taken.

  • Become familiar with the Framingham State University campus.

Orientation is MANDATORY for all Day Division students entering Framingham State University.

When is Orientation?

First-Year orientation is a one-day experience that takes place on January 11th, 2018. If the University is closed on January 11th due to inclement weather, orientation will take place on January 12th. In this instance, we will communicate with you via email. Once you deposit at Framingham State University, you will receive a pamphlet in the mail inviting you to orientation. Please register for orientation by January 5th. Orientation begins at 8:30 a.m. and will wrap up around 4:30 p.m.

You may park in the Salem End lot. You will not need a parking pass for the duration of orientation. Please click here to see the map for directions and look for the parking signs when you arrive on campus.

Where do I check in?

Check-in takes place in the lobby of the McCarthy Center on State Street. Members of the Black & Gold Orientation team will be available to offer directions and assistance as you arrive on campus.

Can I bring my parents, other family members, or guests?

*Please note: there is no Parent/Guest Orientation in January. Friends and/or family members will not be allowed to accompany incoming students throughout the program. Although guests are welcome to visit the campus during Orientation, only new students are allowed to participate in the Orientation Program.

Family/Guest Orientation is a day-long event that occurs in June. The cost is $45/person. It includes a light breakfast, lunch, dinner, a parent handbook, and informational materials. The orientation program is completely separate from the first-year program. You will be reunited at the end of the day. For more information on Family/Guest Orientation, click here.

What should I bring to Orientation?

We will provide everything you need for Orientation, but this year we are collecting canned goods and non-perishables for A Place to Turn (, which is an emergency food pantry in Natick. Help us serve our MetroWest community by bringing food for our food drive!  We will be collecting cans of soup, tuna, baking mixes, rice, pasta and more. All students who bring donations will be entered into a raffle to win awesome prizes. There will be winners each day of orientation, so don’t miss out! Thanks for helping FSU give back!

Who are the Black & Gold Orientation Leaders?

The Black & Gold Orientation Team is comprised of current students who are outstanding leaders in academics and who are involved in campus life at Framingham State University. They are trained to help you make a smooth transition to the University. They are looking forward to meeting you at your orientation!

Will meals be provided?

Muffins, pastries, snacks, and coffee are available in the morning. We will also provide lunch and dinner for students during orientation. Dietary restrictions and allergies are accommodated in our Dining Hall.

What orientation do I attend if I've changed my major?

*This only applies for June Orientation.* If you have worked with Admissions to change your major and you have received confirmation that your major has been changed, you may come to the orientation date for your new major. It is important to come to the orientation date for your major. Check-in time and location will be the same for all six days of first-year orientation in June. If you are planning to come to August orientation, all majors will attend first-year orientation. If you have questions about how to change your major before you come to orientation, please contact Admissions at 508-626-4500.

What about placement testing?

Entering students must have completed placement testing prior to Orientation. You will receive detailed information regarding placement testing in a letter that will be sent in the mail. If you have not completed placement testing, and do not have a scheduled time to do so, please contact the Placement Testing Coordinator at (508) 626-4905 or sign up online.

Is there a fee for First-Year Orientation?

There is no separate charge for student orientation.
