Join us for the Martin Luther King Jr. Commemorative Lecture, featuring Nbaba Mandela on Thursday, Jan. 23rd, at 6 p.m. in the Dwight Hall Perfoming Arts Center! 

Ndaba Mandela, the grandson of Nelson Mandela, is a prominent advocate for social change and the co-founder and chairman of the Africa Rising Foundation, which aims to promote a positive image of Africa globally. He actively works to inspire the next generation of African leaders and combat HIV/AIDS through various initiatives, including his role as an executive director at UNAIDS. Ndaba’s recent book, Going to the Mountain: Life Lessons from My Grandfather, Nelson Mandela, offers a personal perspective on his grandfather’s teachings and legacy. He has been recognized as one of BET’s “28 Men of Change” and is featured in the International Emmy-nominated docu-series The Mandela Project. 

Through his dynamic presentations and community-focused projects, Ndaba continues to embody and share Nelson Mandela’s message that one individual can indeed make a difference, emphasizing values such as humility and equality learned during his upbringing with his grandfather.

Center for Inclusive Excellence

As a part of the MLK Commemoration Series, the roundtable will explore how diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) align with Dr. King’s vision of equality and justice and how these principles drive innovation, productivity, and efficiency in business. Professors from various fields of the College of Business will reflect on both research and real-world examples that show the value of diverse teams in companies.

Inspired by the current exhibition DM Witman: Ecologies of Restoration, Pathways to Action includes opportunities to hear from experts whose work focuses on the human potential to act in the face of our changing climate, and to learn how each of us can get involved with local climate-focused organizations. The evening will begin with lightning presentations by, and conversation among, artist DM Witman, Dr. Lawrence McKenna (FSU Department Chair, Environment, Society, & Sustainability), Dr. Vandana Singh (FSU Professor, Environment, Society, & Sustainability), and Uli Lorimer (Native Plant Trust Director of Horticulture). Join us after the presentation for continued conversations with climate advocates and community leaders to ask questions and hear about opportunities to get involved with building a more resilient climate, starting with your own community.

The intention of this program is to create an inclusive, welcoming space to explore practical ways to tackle climate change. Several local and national organizations will be present and ready to offer ways for you to get involved in taking action.

Biology Field Trip

Professor Brandi Van Roo (Biology) will be taking her BIOL 236 Ornithology class to Plum Island for an all-day field trip on Wednesday April 2. Any considerations allowing students to make up missed classwork in order to attend this activity is greatly appreciated.
