Zeynep Gönen has received her PhD in Sociology from Binghamton University in 2011. Her work focuses on law, punishment, policing, and criminalization from a global and historical comparative perspective. Her book The Politics of Crime in Turkey (I.B.Tauris, 2016) explores the new forms of policing and criminalization of the racialized urban poor in contemporary Turkey. She continues her research and scholarship in policing and security in Turkey in connection to other instances of penal state formation around the world. Dr. Gönen often teaches courses that utilizes a critical perspective to understanding criminological and sociological topics. She loves incorporating creative approaches and tools in her classes and on campus to address contemporary issues, and to build community with her students.
