Program Requirements
Course Prerequisites
Courses may have specified conditions for enrollment, such as prior completion of less advanced courses, permission of the instructor, or appropriate placement test scores. Students should refer to course descriptions in the department listings for prerequisite requirements.
For information on portfolio/interview sessions, please refer to the Admissions section of this catalog. Students are required to furnish all personal art materials unless otherwise specified.
Major Core Requirements:
Five (6) core requirements consisting of:
- ARTH 270 History of Art I
- ARTH 272 History of Art II
- ARTH 273 Modern Art History
- ARTH 285 The Art of Asia or ARTH 288 Latin American Art
- ARTH 383 Contemporary Art History
- ARTH 483 Seminar in the History of Art or ARTH 495 Internship in Art History
Eight (6) concentration requirements consisting of:
- Four (4) Art History (ARTH) electives - at least one (1) at the 300-level or above.
- Two (2) Art Studio (ARTS) courses
Notes:
- Reading knowledge of at least one (1) foreign language (usually French/Italian and German) is recommended for those contemplating graduate programs in Museum Studies, Art Conservation, or Art History.
- An internship in a museum is highly recommended.

Art History Minor Requirements (5 courses):
- Five (5) of Art History courses. Students are encouraged to discuss their plans with an Art History faculty member. At least one (1) course must be taken at the 300-level or above.
Danforth Art Museum
The Danforth Art Museum at Framingham State University is a comprehensive museum and cultural institution located a short walk from campus on the Framingham Centre Green. It features rotating collections from regional artists as well as an extensive permanent collection of more than 3,500 works of art across all media from the 19th century to present day. FSU students have free access to the museum and the ability to apply for internships that provide real-world knowledge of curating and operating an art museum.
Career Opportunities
Art History majors will be prepared to pursue career opportunities across a wide range of exciting fields, including:
Curator
Work on exhibits in a gallery, university, museum, or corporate collection.
Gallery Manager
Oversees the operations of the gallery, including installations and removal of exhibits.
Art Teacher
Responsible for teaching and instructing students in various art forms.
Archivist
Assemble, catalog, preserve and manage valuable collections of historical information.
Museum Technician
Restore, maintain, or prepare objects in museum collections for storage, research, or exhibit.
Auctioneer
Organize and host auctions, possess familiarity of the value of objects.
